We make things so safe for people in this city it is just untrue -
traffic lights every few hundred (if you're lucky) metres, cycle lanes
reducing perfectly good roads to 24/7 danger zones, enough painted
directions on the roads to confuss anyone and a totally stupid 50 / 60
speed limit on the M275. Do the city council not realise that not all
residents are total nutters and don't need a nanny state to use the
roads safely.

The simple answer to that must be no! - and for the following reason
-

Queen Street, 8:00pm, last week.
One a******e on his bike
In black
No lights
Cycling the wrong way up a cycle lane!

With this type of behaviour I fear there really is no hope!

Its true - there really is no hope - for our council.

Like fools we elect them and then expect them to do something worthwhile,
except they then turn into well-meaning jobsworths and nanny us with silly
restrictions that reduce our enjoyment of living here.

And we have berks that cycle around without lights. Maybe the motorist that
knocks him off will get to sue him for damage to his car.

Meantime our council needs changing. How do we vote for a revolution?

Well I've decided it's not just Portsmouth Council that are Nannies.

Heard the best on Wave 105 this morning - some guy (expert) being
interviewed about the busiest day of the year for internet shopping.
He explained that people prefered shopping on the internet because
they can drop goods into their basket and keep a note of how much they
are paying............... pardon me for being naive but........ is it
not possible for people to use that thing called a brain and do that
when shopping in the real world?

The worlds gone mad I tell you.................

Ah yes, but the nice thing about an electronic shopping basket is that
one can put goods back on the shelf without traipsing round the store
to do so.

Perhaps people like internet shopping because they're not getting hit
by extortionate parking charges or unreliable bus services, can take
their time picking and choosing, aren't getting crushed and crowded in
the hustle-bustle and can get a cuppa as and when they like.

Oh yes, forgot the comfort of no pickpockets, less probability of the
odd impulse buy and it the fact that it can be lashing it down and
howling a gale and it makes not one jot of difference.

I totally agree with you on all counts.

I just found it hard to believe that the 'expert' thought that the
ability to keep a record of what was being spent meant that online was
better that the real thing.

A happy mix of online and normal is healthy I thnk.

Anyway - to totally change the subject and get my grumpy head back on
( which is so unlike me!), Highway Code Rule 259,
hmmmmmm....................Maybe this rule should be re-written for
the Portsmouth area to read - 'unless you join the A27 ( west and east
bound) from the Eastern Road - in which case please ignore'.
