Does anyone remember this school?

I attended it from about 1959 till about 1963 when I went to Prescot Grammar
School.

I currently live in Australia (since 1973) but went back for a short holiday
in 1999.

Not only could I not find Prescot Grammar, (it was a housing estate) but I
couldn't find Hillfoot Hey (it looked like that had been turned into a
housing estate as well)

If that's right it's scandalous as Hillfoot Hey was a brand new school when
I went there!

Still that's life

It's scandalous alright Bill! Come on think about it you must be about 60
odd? You don't think they keep them that long? But i think you only just
missed seeing the remains of Hillfoot Hey, it is as you say a new housing
"area" not an "estate". Quite expensive as well Bill, just at the bottom of
aptly named "school lane". Very nice!

I do not know Hillfoot Hey, but that would put the school approx. going
on 60 yrs old. I personally do not think that is old for a building.
I went to Highfield Sec. Mod. school about the same time and I know it
is still standing.
If you got rid of a building every 60 yrs. that would be a crime.
I live in USA and some of the schools are just as old and in nice
condition.

I went to Hillfoot Hey Mr Ed Dunne was the headmaster, his daughter was Janet. I remember the French teacher who spoke about 7 languages. I left in 1963 or 62.

Hi Alan

I was at HH from 1959 to 1961 (moved, well expelled, from Quarry Bank). Yes, I remember Mr Dunne ... I was caned a few times! Left with 3 ULCIs, English, French and Maths.

You must have been 1 or 2 years below me.

Hi all!
I attended this Institution from 1963-69. Mr Pomfret was in charge.
I certainly recall the eccentric nature of some of the teachers...Geoff Leyland and Geoff Lynan...Mr Copestake, too.

Hey john. I can just remember your name. Maybe you can remember mine Alan Bennett.....started in 58 and left in 63.

I recall all the same teachers as you do. plus McGrath (PT) Jordan (PT & Arthur Whalley Maths even Norbert "Nobby" Forbes with France and Spanish.

When I left I played football for 1 season but a severe injury killed off my pro career and went to work as a Customs Official for a company of Grain Importers for 2 years before playing semi pro football and working in the family butchers trade part time .

Hated being a butcher, We as a Salesman in Plant hire and did that from 68.to 1980.. getting married in 1974.

Opened my own UK van service in 80 and expanded it big style all over Europe with vans to 38 ton truck with my 2 partners before we sold out......... Opened an entertainment agency in 1992 and spent my time in that world till I retired in 2006. Had a great time doing that and making friends in show business from all over the UK and the World. Even won the UK agency of the year in 2006, so finished on a high.....Enjoy life now as a director of my local semi pro football club and holidaying with my Lovely and Beautiful wife Linda.
Spoke a few times to Geoff ( as above ) but seems things drifted.
Hope to hear back . Stay well and safe,
Cheers
Alan Bennett.

You are 10 years out! I went to Hillfoot Hey in 1956, the first year it opened. Mr Dunne was the headmaster; the only time I was caned was when the whole school was caned because whoever wrote obscenities in the toilets would not own up. The French teacher was a very kind man and in the summer took several boys, including me, for weekend hikes in the Wirrel. The school, had a first class running track, a cricket and football pitch and four tennis courts. The facilities were as good as most public schools. It just shows you how the UK has gone down the pan; just after the war we could afford to build decent schools. Now, all these brilliant facilities have been sold off. Today's children get a very raw deal.

I went to HH from 58 to 66.

It WAS scandalous.

I believe the school was part of a dodgy deal during Derek Hattons rule in Liverpool. The school was maybe 20 or 25 years old when demolished, early 80's??. Fantastic quality building. Gym, woodwork and metalwork shops, 3 big science labs, 6 lane cinder running track and athletics oval, 2 football pitches, pavilion, lots of lovely land to make a killing from in a housing deal.

I knew one of your correspondents on this page, Alan Bennet. All the best to him/you. I remember him as a popular, happy go lucky and humorous boy, mop of blond hair. Did he know John (Joe) Baker? He was a thorn in the side of our French teacher, always larking about. So much so that he got the blame a few times for things he didn't do and the real culprits had to own up once or twice to do the honourable thing. None could compare with J Lynan though, what a character.

When my pal, Phil Ellis, was killed in a car crash (and others injured) during a party on a Saturday night shortly before A levels, a few close pals like me who had been with him were too upset to go to school on the following Monday. Couldn't face school. Eddie Dunn wouldn't let us take our exams. It took a mission of several teachers to plead and persuade him to relent. Some liked Eddie but I found him haughty, snobby and cruel. Like most schools I suppose, some of the teachers were awful but some were great.

Hi guys,
Just picked up this thread - better late than never as they say!
I was at HH from when it opened in Sep 56 till I left in July 59 - was in Faraday House.
Remember well the Head Mr Dunne (he was also my Chemistry teacher) (had 6 of the best from him!) and also Mr Pomfret
(Deputy Head and French/Spanish teacher) also Mr Finney (English), Mr Copenacre (Art), Mr Jordan (PE and Geog), Mr Lowe (PE) & Mr Whalley (Maths).
As has been said excellent sports facilities - I played football and cricket and ran for the school.
Think it was only open for about 30 years.
My sister lives in Woolton so often used to have a mooch around the area when visiting her - not since it became a housing estate.
Best wishes to all
Mike Wilkinson

Just found this site. I went to HH from 1959-64 and remember the names of all the teachers mentioned in previous posts.
Surprised that no one mentioned Alan Favager who taught English and played football for Marine, great guy and good teacher. Also remember chemistry teacher Mr.Howard who was very adept at throwing blackboard dusters and whacking pupils with Bunsen burner tubes! Used to go to Camp Hill after school and play football till it went dark then cycled home through Allerton cemetery (scary!).

I went to hillfoot which was located on hillfoot Avenue between 1967 to 73. The head was mr pomfret, deputy mr Holden, mr burn maths, mr Jones English, truly great school with amazing sports facilities. Spent loads of time messing about and still came out with O levels. Real shame it became a housing estate, all part of liverpool councils cut backs cheers 👍

Hey Malcolm ..... I am Andre Francis and I am pretty sure you are the one that I used to play pseudo-football/cricket with using a die or coin to simulate games. We often played at the top of the steps, close to the gym I think. If this is you, then we did communicate previously by email, but unfortunately I cannot find any record. I seem to remember you ran your own company. I'm not sure that you will have all of my email, so it is andre.f...@gmail.com. Please get back in touch. Regards ..... Andre
