I have been living and working in Wales for the past 15 years and have now
taken early retirement. I am now seriously thinking of returning to
Liverpool. It is not an easy decision to make. The environment around here
is great, with both the countryside and the sea. The trouble is that life is
very slow and quiet and although the local people are ok they have not got
the same humour and savvy as scousers. I have only visited Liverpool a few
times in the last few years and so don't really know what it is like now.
I was wondering if there is anyone who is out there who has been in this
position and has returned to Liverpool after a long time away. Was it a good
move or did you regret it? And before anyone asks; No! I wont miss the
sheep,
Joe

You don't have to suffer like this SR, go see your GP and demand more
medication. Life won't seem so awful when they pump you full of Mogadon.
Best wishes

While I'm at the doctors I'll get some nitrous oxide too,it might just make
your joke remotely amusing.
Kindest regards

Apologies if the reason for your few visits to Liverpool over the past 15
years is because you're disabled.

Nice to hear from you Dave. I live near Conwy about 70 miles from Liverpool.
Disablement has kept me close to home these last few years although the same
disability (heart trouble) has also caused me to visit Liverpool several
times these past couple of years for hospital appointments (and an eventual
heart by-pass) at the Cardiothoracic centre in Broadgreen. Thanks to that
wonderful hospital I now feel fit enough to stand my ground in a Yates' Wine
Lodge once again. I take your point about students on this site just wanting
to score points. There must be thousands of exiled scousers like myself who
would love to keep in touch with Liverpool through a NG such as this, but
who are put off when they see posters constantly giving negative, smart-ass
replies to simple straight forward questions.

Overall, stats have proven that Liverpool is a very safe City compared to
others. It just depends where you can afford to live. I take loads of pics
at night in Liverpool and have never felt threatened. However, I always
carry a blade to peel my apple.

What was negative about my little one-liner concerning the sheep?
It was a joke ffs.
If you're from Liverpool you should know that a sense of humour is needed to
get through the day around these parts.

Hallo again SR
I know from experience that every time you mention Wales to a scouser you
are going to get "the" sheep joke. I was hoping that if I got "the" sheep
joke in first then no one would feel tempted to give "the" sheep joke. OK I
was wrong - there is no way you can mention Wales to a scouser, ever, and
not get "the" sheep joke. My question was "what is it like to live in
Liverpool these days? and you made no effort to answer my question other
than to make the sheep joke. It came over to me as a negative response but
if you say it was simply intended to be humorous then I humbly apologise.
Thanks to Dave Wood for his helpful reply. BTW Dave I read your excellent
post some weeks ago on "Eric's". and then some time shortly after there was
an article in (I think it was a Saturday edition of the Mail) which was all
about Erics. What is the story about that? Did they get the idea from you?
Regards
Joe

Not always.Depending on what part of Wales you live in there's a few good
Rugby/Football jokes I can call on ;)

That's because I'm naturally lazy.
If you've been away from Liverpool for 15 years you can expect to find it in
a similar condition to when you left.Apart from a lot of LA councillors
shouting about COC etc. that is.
It came over to me as a negative response but

No problem.

If you send me your address (offline to 'acebassatntlworlddotcom') I'll
happily post on a book containing two Julian Cope bios that give a good
insight on Eric's.
I'll stand the postage as long as you promise not to let the sheep read it
over your shoulder ;)

Not just Liverpool. People in the South West make the same remarks
(and a few more about inbreeding). It's all about being in close
proximity to a different "culture". I'm sure in the North East the
Scots come in for the same kind of treatment.

Thanks for that kind offer which I may well take up when I get back from my
hols. If Liverpool has not changed since I last lived there 15 years ago
then it will do fine for me. BTW I think what upset me about the "sheep"
joke was the realization (not only that it was funny) but that I had led
with the chin by naively exclaiming "I wont miss the sheep! and of course
you are right in there with the sucker punch saying, "No! but I bet they
will miss you!" Ouch! How could anyone resist it.
Nice to hear from you also Hugo, but I had thought that those Essex girls,
Tracey and Sharon, were regarded as being the natural South-West
"Woolly-backs".

Joe
Yepp, I'm still reading. Whats wrong with shouting about COC?
£2 billion not enough for ya??? ;-)
What's the betting I don't see a penny of that £2 billion?
Maybe the best I can hope for is that some of that cash will go towards more
parking spaces for ppl wishing to visit town of a night.
SR
When you go into a brand new restaurant or you go shopping in the new
shopping centre look around you.
By the way the parking thing actually creates more free parking spaces at
night not less but still doesn't remove the double yellow lines from outside
the ECHO building so doubtless we will keep getting stories like last
nights.

And tonight's...
Even so, I see that since LCC took control of stalking car users the number
of tickets issued has risen five-fold.The 'Echo' has'nt anything to do with
that, just over zealous ttraffic nazis employed by the council to raise
revenue.
No wonder town's empty.
SR
I am not aware of people complaining that parking tickets are being issued
when they are parked legally.
The answer to not getting a ticket is simple. Don't break the law. I have
zero sympathy with people who park illegally because when I was in a
wheelchair for six months some years ago I discovered the joy of trying to
get round cars parked on pavements. Therefore they should be ticketed. If
people park on double yellows to go to the shop and a child gets run over
because they can't see to cross the road the driver should be jailed not
just ticketed.
If more people are getting caught breaking the law I welcome that.
If you want to have a debate on whether the yellow lines should be in
particular locations then fine but if they are there don't get annoyed just
because the Council is good at enforcing them.
Also at least now the money from tickets stays in Liverpool. previously it
went to the London Government.
Typical non-answer.

I wish laws were passed everytime I struggled over something or other.

And what about the stupid child (with stupid parents probably) that runs out
into the road?Who's fault is that?

I'm annoyed because the council is just cherrypicking to increase revenue.

Just as I thought,another back-door tax.
SR
Not at all. Don't break the law don't get a ticket. Even you should be
able to understand that.

We would spend a lot of time passing laws requiring people to use shorter
words.

Children aren't in full posession of adult faculties. Neither are some
adults.

Your evidence for that being?

Actually, I believe it is ring fenced for road-type improvements.

You're the one who's asking for eveidence so where are the figures for kids
involved in accidents as a result of illegally parked cars,or is it you
using another soundbite to justify persecuting car owners?

Extract from a letter in last night's 'Echo' from a Mr.Franklyn Churney of
Liverpool 18...
"In Allerton Rd. (I've) seen vans spill out teams of traffic wardens at the
'best time' to issue the maximum number of parking tickets like SWAT
teams, almost fighting with each other to get their tickets on a car
windscreen first"
He also pleads for the councillors to "wake up" but I'm not holding my
breath.
