Leeds was buzzin' then, I was 17 then and it was a great laugh.
Panama Joes (aka San Miguels - Yell - The Tunnel - Leeds Arena)- anyone have
any tales to tell, I remember going in once and Eddie Kidd was there when he
was doing the levis ads and so was Dave Lee Travis. I'm convinced they had
dwarf throwing on one night, crazy days.
The "original" Ritzys (now in the merrion centre) was based in the building
where Soames Casino is behind the merrion centre, anyone remember that.
What about Sunset and Vine and Madisons Nightclub.
Any one else any tales from t Leeds nightlife in the eighties to share.
Cheers
Carl
I remember Soames Casino as Cinderella's. (I think but that man have been
70's)

Used to be a cardholder for Ritzy's for a while. All the punters

Once pushed Tommy Wright (diminutive ex-LUFC footballer) against the
wall in S&V 'cos he's played like a twat one Saturday
>and Madisons Nightclub.
Got bought beers in there by Martin Dickinson (another ex-LUFC player)
and Denis irwin (current MU player and ex-LUFC player). I was around
the time Denis was shagging my mate's sister.

That's em all. Except for the night we "ruffled" the bouncers at
Madisons. They didn't like us shouting while queueing and told my mate
he was barred. We were so pissed, we thought we could fool them by
going across the road and swapping coats. On our return we had a minor
disagreement with them cos we said we'd only just arrived. After
another 5 minutes argy-bargy they let us all in except for the lad who
was barred. They made him stand in the foyer at the bottom of the
stairs and wouldn't even let him go for his taxi. Cos we were pissed
we thought this was hilarious ...

>Hi
>Anyone remember
Yes, well.
There used to be a whole heap of little clubs in Chapeltown. I dont
know how dangerous they were, but they used to feel pretty dangerous.
Reggae and tarts, and obscure little lumps called Quiddeals that you
had to go and smoke in the bog which stank, no joke. And there it was,
in one of those bogs that I first heard that my own true love had just
got married and was having a reception in Harrogate at this very
minute. So we tanked up on Redstripe and Quiddeals and went and
gatecrashed Harrogate. And on her wedding night me Own True Love told
me I would always be the only man in her life. If anyone knows her
Email address I would be very obliged.
But thats probably mid to late seventies. What was the club called?
Blue Diamond or something like that, Double Diamond? Black Diamond?
And then, on our street there were two little cellar clubs, they used
to be called Shabbeens. Gigantic bass speakers, Reggae, Redstripe and
Quiddeals. Never went in, couldnt afford them. One night I was sat on
the wall of our backyard in the moonlight, playing a little quiet
blues on me guitar and a bloke came out of one of the shabbeens and
listened to me playing for a while, stuffed half a joint into me hand
and walked away amongst the redbricks. It used to be be a bit softer
in those days, not so desperate, mate of mine got a hole kicked in his
head in the same district fifteen years later, all crack and shotguns.
Peace
Michael
>Hi
>Anyone remember the good old days
In the eighties I was singing OM and scrubbing the floor with
toothbrushes, and pubs and clubs were pretty much out. So I go back
another ten years an tell you about a pub I bet no ones heard of. The
Star and Garter on Kirkstall Road. I know its not called that these
days, it went through a terrible period of being called Bar-Celona
(yeuch!) and since then I havnt seen it anymore. Its probably been
pulled down to make way for a Smooth-Flo installation.
Back then it was an exciting hangout full of Hells Angels and
underage drinkers, one of which I would have loved to be, but I didnt
have the bread, man.
Me and me mate Bill used to both get a quid a week pocket money,
so Friday night we clubbed together and went down the Star and Garter
to buy a Quiddeal from the Angels. They were alright, the Angels. We
got a good Quiddeal from them, and they always warned us if there was
going to be any trouble.
There was one especially pleasant bloke called Nutter, long
greasy black hair and filthy Levis. They called him Nutter because of
his devastating headbutt technique, and a general tendancy to wanton
violence when roused. I met him a long time later in a little chic bar
in the city centre, all dressed up in creamy flannels and a smart
hairdo. "Hey Nutter," says I, which snaps him away from the smart
looking blond at his elbow, and a look of panic comes into his eyes.
"Reginald," he whispers desperately. "The names Reginald, man". Behold
how the mighty are fallen.
Anyway, one night Nutter told us they were expecting a contingent
of "Blue Angels" who were coming to persuade our lads that it would be
better to throw away their Hells Angel colours and become part of the
big, happy, Blue Angel family. We didnt get out fast enough, and I
suddenly find myself under a pile of people in the corner, all trying
to get out of the way of flying chairs and beerglasses. I crawl to the
exit and get to my feet only to be confronted by a drunken giant who
threatens to kick me head in because Im a bastard. I was young and
fast in those days, and full of adrenalin, so i dive between his legs,
do a neat forward roll behind his back and exit the pub into a little
knot of dithering policemen, all shit scared to go inside and asking
daft questions like "Who started it?"
Funny how you can get away with things like that when youre a
kid. If I tried it these days Ild end up in jail, or in a wheelchair.
Peace
Michael
