your best bet would be one of the following:-
1 ask a friend who knows about computers and ask them to go along with
you
2 Pc World is in Cardiff big store, been there years, prices ok, not
the cheapest, but
easy to go back to if you have problem (just bought for a friend an
intel p4 3.06 ghz 160 gig hd 1 gig mem 19inch lcd screen from there for
less than £700) (bettern than Dell could do at the time)
Do you need a complete system, it may be possible to upgrade your
existing one?
let me know what you have and I can tell you if you want.

Thanks for the gen. I live at the other end of Cardiff (Llanrumney) but I'll
pop along and check them out.

Update: very impressed. As it happened my old PC packed up just before
Christmas so I went there for a replacement. Got one of the "barebones" AMD
dual core systems (case, motherboard, 2GB RAM) for £130, bought a few other
bits and transferred a few from the old machine. Back up and running again.
NOT impressed with the revamped PC World/Currys in Newport Road. Too noisy.
Abort. Reboot. Return to previous version.
