"Blunkett claims that the innocent have nothing to fear... The government
looks set to force Internet service providers (ISPs) to keep records of
customer usage... Tucked away in last week's Emergency Anti-Terrorist Bill
were proposals to "enable" ISPs to retain data logs, detailing senders and
recipients of emails, or Web sites visited."

Isn't this a little worrying? Even unacceptable?

I sometimes wonder whether this is real or I'm still reading a science
fiction book. What's going on scares me. The EU wanted to impose similar
laws before the plane attacks in the US as did the FBI. Now there is no
debating, its just being done.

It will be done eventually, all we can hope to achieve is delay. Too
many powerful organisations have interests in being able to track
everyone and every thought or opinion they express. That way there is
total control.

I've been watching this happening now for over 25 years. They always wait
until the public demand protection. In the 80's under the conservatives,
the crime rates were allowed to keep going up until the public demanded that
the government do something. They did, they passed a bill with a 3 line
whip which went way beyond what was needed. Funny how that is no longer
enough power and they still need more.
