On Saturday night turn off all equipment that is on standby, drawing
electrical power for no reason.
Worth taking part in this experiment.

Enjoy!

Hello All

This is my last communication with you this side of Standby Saturday !

'People power' has been the strength through this first campaign, & everyone
has done an amazing job in spreading the word. I will be relying on the the
pioneers that have already registered to continue the good work, and I will
be personally contacting all of the registrations over the next few weeks to
ask if I can list them on the 'advocates' tab on the website. I am very keen
to show you all off, and learn your experiences !

I was at Upton Heath School in Chester yesterday to meet little Katie
Chisholm (aged 7) who has become student 'Energy Monitor' for her class, &
to present her with a certificate for all her hard work encouraging people
to switch-off at the end of the school day. A 'Standby Sally' in the making!
I will be keeping in touch with handy hints & tips about how to keep up the
good work, as with lots of other schools around the country. Well done
Katie.

Thank you to all the schools, homes, businesses & charities that have joined
the 2007 campaign & will be starting to switch off this Saturday. It's good
to know you are not alone by committing to this worthwhile permanent habit
change.

Don't forget - If everyone in the country joined in, it would save 2 power
stations of electricity and 3 million tones of carbon emissions per year.

Keep an eye on Channel 5 news today, where you will see me spreading the
word. and if you're in the Thames Valley region, you will see a fantastic
feature about Standby Saturday there too on ITV.

Best wishes to you all

Dear All,

Only 5 more days between now & STANDBY SATURDAY - the first UK National
Switch Off of Standby Power ! How quickly time flies!

The Campaign is really going well with lots of homes, schools & businesses
registering to switch-off on Standby Saturday.. and beyond. Last week you
really up-ed the pace with up to 1000 visits per day through the website -
www.StandbySaturday.com

I now have some news about the most frequently asked question .

Who is behind this Campaign? Corporation, Government, or Energy Trust?

No - The answer is simply . Just me!

I am the founder of the Campaign, a mother-of-two working a full-time job.
My name is Sally - although I am now affectionately known as 'Standby Sally'
!

When I came up with the idea of this not-for-profit Campaign earlier this
year, my biggest challenge was how to spread the word around the whole of
the country - as an individual with no real budget. I was told (by a very
respectable Media & Communications Agency in London) that I was embarking on
an impossible task. I was given an example of a UK beer company that had
spent 3 million pounds that very month to advertise their new brand of ice
beer... and I'd never heard of it !

Thankfully, they then gave me a great piece of advice about advocacy. They
told me that 'If you believe in this cause then other people might too. and
when people really believe strongly about something, they tell others &
willingly spread the word.'

So I spent what I could on some email marketing and then relied on word of
mouth, the power of advocacy, and some free newspapers to do the rest.

Well it appears that you all do believe strongly about unnecessary energy
wastage, climate change, and all 'doing our bit' in the UK - together.
Consequently 6 weeks after the launch, thanks to you all, visits through the
website tipped 13,000 yesterday.

I can see you have told your friends, your schools, your staff, your
workplaces, your church, your customers, your community centres, your MD's,
and your local magazines & clubs - BRILLIANT!

Please keep doing what you're doing on these last few days by spreading the
word far & wide so everyone has the opportunity to take part in Standby
Saturday.and beyond.

I was busy promoting the Campaign all weekend in Covent Garden with The Big
Draw (http://www.campaignfordrawing.org/bigdraw/index.aspx) working with
children to help shape the future. This week I am hoping to get TV news &
national press coverage to get maximum registration & participation. Watch
this space!

Finally - Keep an eye on the website as it changes regularly. and thank you
again.

Sally

Hello All

Thank you for registering your commitment to join STANDBY SATURDAY on 20th
October 2007 ... and beyond.

This email is to remind you that we are now on a 10 day countdown to the
first UK nationwide switch-off of standby power - overnight every night.

I will be keeping you updated with news of the other environmentally
conscious people & organisations that are joining you in switching-off
starting on Standby Saturday.

Please keep telling everyone about this not-for-profit campaign. The more
homes, schools & offices that register, the more we can stop unnecessary
energy wastage & reduce C02 emissions put into the atmosphere for our future
generations.

Here's some facts for today;

Appliances such as TVs, computers and hi-fi's left on standby create more
than four million tonnes of extra carbon emissions in the UK alone (DEFRA),
using the equivalent of the annual output of 2˝ 700megawatt power stations.
A survey by the Energy Saving Trust also found that the average household
has up to 12 gadgets left on standby or charging at any one time, which the
Trust estimates respresents 10 per cent of their entire electricity bill.

Coming soon - Keep an eye on the website for the first winners of the
'One-A-Day-Giveaway' remote control standby energy kits, names to be
announced. Automatic entry on registration via www.StandbySaturday.com

Once again thank you for registering ... & who else can you tell in the next
10 days???

Hmm. If equipment is on standby for a reason then it is drawing power for
a reason as well.

Meanwhile, I wonder how much energy is expended telling people to save
energy..?
