Hi

I would be grateful if any dragonfly expert could comment on the
identification at http://petersphotos.fotoblog.co.uk/c1318089.html

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Where was this picture taken?

There are 4 resident darters in the UK but at least one of the 'migrant'
darters has been breeding for several years at a few sites.

It is not White-faced Darter or Black Darter.

Out of the resident Darters, there are Common and Ruddy left (although in
Scotland the Common darter family is 'split' into Highland darter but the
validity of this seperate species is questionable).

Ruddy has black legs and I think I can see a white stripe on your darters
legs, also ruddy has a 'nipped' or hour glass waist and this one has not.

From the migrant species there are Yellow Winged Darter and Red-veined
Darter. Yours does not have the red veins (male) or the yellow veins
(female). That leaves Yellow Winged and although yours does have yellow
patches they are not extensive enough for that species. The yellow patches
are very extensive for Common though!!! but the Highland darter does tend to
have the stripe on the antehumeral region. Yours may be a melanic form of
Common, resembling the Highland!!!

So, in all probability you have photographed a Common Darter female,
although if someone differs I be happy to hear the reasons why. The yellow
markings like I said are extensive but not unknown.

regards

Aeshna

Hi Aeshna

The photo was taken last month on North Uist on a birdwatching holiday. My
initial ID was Common Darter, although I have little knowledge of
dragonflies. I then read that Common Darters are unknown in Scotland, hence
my query.

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

looks like I got it right!!!! almost.

I was supposing it was photographed in England, but the Scottish 'info' is
the icing on the cake for the i.d.
