This group should suffice to act as an agent to
help keep abreast of information in relation to
Rockdale Council's new off leash fencing
fiasco. The following is a copy of my correspondance
with Frank Sator's office.

Thanks Karen for your reply. What most dog walkers I have
spoken to cannot understand, is why Council does not erect
the fencing where the present signs and doggy bins stand.
That is even if they have to erect fencing at all!
If you look at those signs you will see that our previous area
(delineated in green on the signs) went right to the water's edge.
So a 100 meter fence extension will still leave us with a mere 10%
(area wise) of the old system.

Apparently council have told other compainants that this has
all been bought about by joggers and through pedestrians being
chased by the off leash dogs. I am a regular jogger myself and
have never been chased despite having my own dog loping beside
me!

To my knowledge there is not one single incident of a person being
bitten in that off leash area during my 7 years of frequenting it! The
view of most dog walkers I have spoken to is that Council is being
taken over by people who for cultural reasons just do not like dogs.

In short, I believe no one would object to fencing at the north and
south ends of the park where the delimiters still stand. This would
perhaps benefit those with wayward pups who may bolt out onto
President Ave. Council would also save on fencing costs!

Kind Regards
Michael Harrington.

Dear Michael

Rockdale City Council (RCC) has recently advised this office that they are
considering extending the fence another 100 metres to the south subject to
positive feedback from Colson St residents (RCC will send letters to these
residents shortly for their feedback).

Jay Vaidya (RCC) is looking into this matter and Rockdale Council ref no is
CRM 54252.

Are you are happy with this outcome?

Kind Regards
Karen

Dear Sir, Madam,
Although I reside in Blakehurst my complaint
concerns Rockdale Council, our near neighbour. They recently
have reduced the available off leash dog excercise area near
President Ave by over 95%. This action has outraged many dog
walkers and we have made our complaints to Rockdale Council.

Doubly outraged are the half dozen or so local residents who find
themselves corraled at the rear from the newly erected council
fencing. The entire process seems to be presented as a fait acomplis.
No consultation was sought with dog owners or affected residences.
Can council legally do this? Should they not first make a proposal to
see if there are any objections?

Do you have any advice on how citizens in a democracy should go
about getting a Council decision overturned? Is it a matter of standing
for council membership or are there less draconian ways? Perhaps
hiring a solicitor to fight the decision, or peaceful protests to shame
the present Council into a reversal? I would appreciate any hints or
web links you could provide that would help aggrieved citizens seek
the repealing of a Council decision.

Regards Michael Harrington
