the first time today

Greyhounds will take to the new £1.8m track at Towcester Racecourse for
the first time today (Wednesday) after the venue was yesterday granted
its official licence.

A total of 35,000 cubic metres of soil has been delivered by lorry to
develop the state-of-the art circuit - the first new greyhound track to
open in the UK for 19 years.

The 420m track features banked turns and the latest technology,
including non-shadow, LED flood-lighting.

The only other sporting venue in the country to boast such lighting is
Stamford Bridge, home of the Chelsea football team.

Owners will put the new track through its paces when they begin time
trials over the soft sand of the circuit at 10am today.

There are six trials sessions planned this week.

The first greyhound race meeting will take place on Saturday December 6
with further meetings scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights in the
run up to Christmas

Kevin Ackerman, chief executive of Towcester Racecourse, said in the New
Year he plans to be racing three times a week

Mr Ackerman added: ?We have created the most spectacular greyhound track
in the country, in a parkland setting and with sweeping views over the
local countryside."

As with the horseracing at Towcester, entry to the greyhound racing is
free. There are also hospitality packages, offering three-course meals,
featuring local ingredients.

The track is capable of staging races featuring six or eight greyhounds
and live racing pictures will be beamed from Towcester to TV audiences
in the UK and around the globe.

The development of the greyhound track is the latest stage of a £12m
investment into Towcester Racecourse, which held its first race in 1876.
It is the only horse racing track in the UK to expand its portfolio into
greyhound racing.
