hello,
About 25% of my garlic have a strange swelling on the stem just above soil
level that I have never seen before
It appears to be a cluster of individual cloves-about 6 in total.
I have taken some off and cut them through.
They have a green, spotted centre.
The main bulb underground is normal as far as I can tell at the moment.
Does anyone know what these "cloves" are and more important are they edible.
If so it would be a bonus
Many thanks.
Norman

It's the type of Garlic you have grown this year, some try to make a flower,
nothing to worry about, quite normal for that type.

My garlic has been in store for a month already, when did you plant yours?

Thanks for that Bob..

Yours in store for a month already???
Mine were planted early November and are only just starting to turn to brown
leaves.
Perhaps it's because I am at 1000ft above sea level here in North Staffs

Thinking about getting them up in a day or two

You have to be careful the heads don't start to open up again ready to start
growing again, doesn't hurt the head just looks nasty.
It's been so dry here since winter and hot too that we have had to water
everything almost daily since then. First proper rain was 3 days ago but
nothing since so it's back to the watering again. Our Garlic got rust quite
early and badly this year, gets it a bit every year, so it was ready to come
up a couple of weeks early, it's true, and is not it's usual quality.

BTW most UK gardeners use the newsgroup uk.rec.gardening which is why
there isn't much on here. (do bottom post, as above, if you go there! It's
difficult to follow a large thread if you don't and some might get sniffy)

I'm very new to this newsgroup thing.
I'll know where to come for information in future

Well it's part of Usenet which predates the www. A lot of people now come to
Newsgroups, without realising what they are, via a web portal and have no
idea they can come direct or what a newsgroup actually is. They have been
brainwashed that the www is everything so think it's some sort of web forum.
Most e-mail client programs, like Windows Live Mail or Internet Express,
have newsgroups somewhere in their abilities if you look but then a lot of
people don't use an e-mail client program on their computer they use their
ISPs web based mail. My ISP carries over 100,000 different newsgroups.
There are no rules as such but there are some conventions to make use easy,
like bottom posting, removing waste in headers, snipping rubbish etc.
I would also suggest not getting drawn into a flame war between posters or
getting dragged into a trolls postings, tread lightly at first. :-)
Have fun.
