anyone got any hints tips on fitting velux windows. am planning to fit
a couple of ggu type in slated roof. seems like very old roof as has
no underfelt. and timbers are 3" by 2 1/2" a little on the small side
i think to take weight. i've seen posts where poeople have installed
them from inside loft area. main concerns r removing too many slates.
possibilty of having to double rafters to take extra weight, and
repacement of slates.
cheers

Before you do anything there are two important rules. 1) you will need to
have either a ladder and crawler, sometimes called roof ladder, or a
scaffolding tower made secured to the building. 2) make sure the velux can
be fitted with out infringing on to any main beams such as ridge and hip
rafters. If this happens either move away to leave at least 12" or 300mm
clearance.
When you've decided the location, take the sash out of the frame. This is
done by opening the window full and pushing in the button each side of the
centre hinge in, the sash should slide out.
Hold the frame up to the desired position to the inside of the roof and mark
the centre on the back of the slate. Put the frame down and either drill or
punch a hole through the slate. Push a screw driver or large nail through
the hole, this will give you the location for the centre on the outside of
the roof.
Write down on a piece of paper the size of the frame and take this with you
to the roof out side. Transfer this measurement, mark with calk equally
around the hole, made from inside. At the next step its a good idea to make
sure you have some polythene or some other material to cover the hole up
with, incase the weather turns wet. Start to take the slates off, starting
at the top two courses above the marked area and two slates wider on the
sides. Pass these slates through the lath to some one inside. Once the
slates or off the rest of the work is carried on from inside the roof space.
Hold the frame on the inside to the decided position, making sure its square
to the surrounding rafters and bottom slate lath, mark with a pencil the out
side of the frame on the rafters and on to the back side of the laths. you
can also do this from the out side if you cut out the centre rafter and the
lath enough to get your body through, this way all you do is place the frame
on the out side on top mark and cut laths and rafter out. Remember when you
cut the centre rafter out to allow extra for the cross trimmers top and
bottom. Measure the frame an add on the thickness for top and bottom
trimmers allowing a bit for clearance. Nail or screw the cross trimmers top
and bottom to the side rafters than fix the centre rafter to the trimmers
keeping them all level and square and if need be case the sides. The rest is
as the instructions supplied.
When the carcass and the frame are fitted start putting back the slates.
the first row across the bottom of the frame.Make sure the apron provided
with the frame covers the nails in the first row of slates, if the apron
doesn't then you have to fit a short row of slates called tops across under
the apron. Continue slating up each side. The first slate laid at the side,
this should cover the apron. After this you must fix a soaker on top of each
slate which butts up to the side of the frame.
When all the slates have been fitted to both sides and the cover strips,
back gutter, and canopy fitted. Take out the slates at the rear of the frame
back gutter in an inverted V until only one slate out at the top of the V .
Re fit the slates until only one slate at the top , this slate is clipped
with a copper strap. This method eliminates a row of straps a cross the back
gutter.
For slates the flashing kit is a EDL
Hope this makes sense

thanks very much. yep most of it makes sence, and is a great help. i've
decided to get a professional for the slating side as i dont have a
crawler or a ripper and not enough experience with slates, and dont
fancy any leaks.
cheers
