I have uneven large slab (flags) patio stones. I have bought some sharp
sand & I have stated work.

I would welcome tips on getting them level; lifting them & dropping them
down (they are very heavy).

Use a spirit level and 2 claw hammers. The first claw hammer is used to lift
the flag a fraction until the spirit level shows level: the second is used
to pound sand under the raised side until it sits evenly. A mix of 1 part
cement to 3 parts sand, applied dry in this way results in a permanent
level job provided you take time over it. My own frontage is covered with 3
x 2 ft flags, really heavy, but have stayed level now since I tackled them
10 years ago.

You are better of using the method of a blob of mortar in each corner and
one in the middle. This allows you to tap them down level, without needing
to lift them up if you use a solid bed of sand and are a little low.
Remember to place them down not drop them, and don't walk on mortared slabs
until next day.

Concrete chips easily so be careful with chisels etc. Use a shovel to lever
slightly and then you use your foot to hold shovel down while getting your
fingers under the slab to lift it.

Slab lifting and laying is VERY dangerous on your back and it is EASY to
damage it. Its hard to describe lifting methods except to say don't
over-stretch.

You should not need to bang the slabs down, use gentle taps with a rubber
mallet or use timber board with a normal lump hammer
