I think the recommendation is that each ring main serves a certain maximum
area.
Cant remember of hand what its is. If you do over load it then providing its
wired correctly, with the correct size wire and fuse then you simply blow
the fuse and learn your lesson - bit late though
if you must have all these high power appliances plugged in !
As for lights, dunno. I suppose as long as the total wattage does not exceed
1200w (i.e 5amps)

I was at a meeting last week where the organiser had plugged two
kettles into a 5amp extension lead.
Melted insulation is such a chore to clean off carpets.
