I believe that Askilan is/was the best kitchen worktop material ever
produced. I have experience of granite, Hardwood, Corian etc etc. Granite
is actually porous and requires quite high maintenance. Corian and all
it's many lookalikes, stain and you cannot put pots straight from the
stove or oven. Askilan you can actually torch with a blowlamp. I did to
prove to my wife that she needn't worry. Mine, with integral sink has
been in domestic use for 14 years now and looks as new. Yes, use Cif type
cleaner and then baby oil, wiping off with kitchen roll. The only
limitation to Askilan was the fairly limited range of darker colours. It
used to be stocked/supplied by John Lewis, but as you say I don't think it
is any longer imported from Germany, if it still exists there.
