We have just had a fire, which resulted in two windows and a door being
covered in thick black soot. The people whom the insurance company have
given the job to, seem to think that they will all clean up
successfully. I have seen a small area that they have cleaned using CIF
together with a biodegradable wall cleaner and booster. To me the pvc
now seems to have a mat finish and is not as white as before.
Can anyone please tell me if hey be cleaned successfully and will it
last ?
Thank You

Never use firms suggested by insurance companies. Provide the insurance
company with a quotation for replacements and stand your ground.

CIF will scratch and ruin it. It's a scouring agent. (An earlier form of
CIF was known as AJAX Scouring Powder). If you want to check this, try it on
your car !!

They have damaged the surface structure of the upvc by the scouring action
of the cleaner, you should not accept this at all. Your window frame
surfaces will stain and retain dirt and grime much more easily in the
future, and their appearance will downgrade very quickly over the next year
or two. Tell your insurance company that cleaning is not acceptable at all.
If necessary ring several upvc manufacturers and get their advice on the
matter. I am sure they will agree with my comments. In return you can quote
their comments to your insurance company. Do not let your insurance company
bully you, by the sounds of it you need new windows.
