We have a front door where you need to use the key to open and lock it - so
if you go out you need to manually lock it - unlike the doors that lock auto
and u just need a key to open it
so we are looking to get this changed - the door is quite a modern one (do
you think it will need the whole door replacing or just the lock)
as an example its like this one -

about half way up it has a standard door handle which you push down to open
the door with a key. - i think this whole thing would have to be taken out
or something...
Anyways - is it possible to get some sort of system where you can unlock the
door without actually putting a key in - like a remote system as used in
cars? i guess it wil lcost a bomb if possible but worth looking into!

well, you can fit a Yale type lock but you would still need a key from
the outside to get in and you have all the problems of fitting the
lock to a UPVC door. (definitely not for the faint hearted if you want
a decent job)

If you really want to go the keyless route, as has already been said,
an electric release is probably the easiest solution and if you look
at the page below, Trimec for one do high security electric strikes so
your security is not compromised but the problems will be in fitting
the equipment to a UPVC door, you buy the stuff seperately. eg. an
electric strike, a keypad or proximy reader to open the electric
release, power supply and all the wiring.
so in summary, can it be done?...YES, there is a staggering level of
choice in locking systems but you have to look furthur than your local
B & Q or screwfix and of course there is the price and if you can't
fit it yourself, the charge for fitting it all.
unless you are prepared to put a few hundred or more quid into the
project it will be probably be rubbish and I wouldn't bother doing it
if I were you.
