I wondered if anyone could help me with a problem. I have stripped a hallway
of paper in the hope of painting it instead of re-papering. The surface is
very uneven and this is made worse by the fact that a window has been filled
in and alterations over the years have made it very difficult indeed to get
a very flat surface all over the wall. Can anyone suggest a product that
will enable me to paint the walls as desired or is it beyond hope.

Desperate, Christine in Cheshire

Generally, people use lining paper. This can be bought in varying
thicknesses so make sure you get some that will hide some of the
uneven surfaces.

I've just had this problem and I used decorators caulk to hide small
cracks between plaster boards. If your walls are plaster and really
bad, you may need to get some plastering done.

In the end, I gave up and added some sharp sand to my paint. The
added texture really helped masquerade those blemishes! :-)

Now there's a few ideas.

Peter.

Not sure if it's a product, but try a 'plasterer' and get them re-
skimmed.

Had the same problem in my hallway - nip down to B&Q and grab a bucket of
"PolySkim" - it's a very fine paste type plaster, apply with the provided
spreader and allow to dry - then smooth off with a damp cloth (like buffing
car wax) - works a treat !
