Hi,

I have made a small MDF cupboard. Do I need to prime it prior to painting?
Do I need to user a proper MDF primer? Or can I use a few coats of emulsion?
(to blend in with my living room walls).

Cheers
Jon

emulsion is fine if you want to leave it emulsioned if you want a finish
i.e. gloss, satin, etc then a wood primer is recommended

The cut ends of MDF soak up paint very quickly, and the glue causes it to go
a bit yacky.
MDF purpose primers are very thick and have low water content, which
prevents the fibres on the surface of MDF standing up. I have found them
very good for eliminating the problem of cut edges on MDF.
Also, use a very fine sandpaper over any cut edges, this also helps, and use
at least two coats of primer, and maybe 2 or 3 topcoats.

You can also seal the surface with Pva but it does require light sanding
afterward. Pva will put the sheen back on cut edges though.

Experience has shown me that using the proper stuff for the job nearly
always gives a better result.
