Hi,

My old dimmer switch stopped working one day, so I decided to replace it
with a new brass one. After purchasing the switch, I removed the old
switch, and was about to put the new one in, when I noticed that both of the
wires inside the box were RED.

Also, the old dimmer switch had connections labelled VL and LI, while the
new one has L1 and L2. The new switch also has a ground connection coming
from it, but I have no green wire.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Richard.

Don't worry, the two red wires are a switching loop. They are both live.
I'm suprised they are red though unless this is the new way of wiring
switching loopes. Typically you should have one red and one black wire and
the black wire will have a red jacket on the end of it indicating its a live
and not neutral.

Some lights need earthing but if there is no earth wire don't connect it as
its not required. Just connect up the two wires.

Is there no earth wire to your back box? If not you must have very old
wiring and it is time for a rewire.
