Discovered Saturday afternoon ,oil leaking from the differential cover
plate on my Vectra 1.6 16 valve gearbox. I swiftly drove over to my local
Vauxhall main dealer ( Horns Stockport) to find they closed at lunch time.
They do not reopen until Monday morning. I phoned all the local dealers in
Manchester area ,only one, Grimshaws of Prestwich ,was open but only able to
supply limited parts. The part I want is the gasket between the cover plate
and the gearbox housing. This is so frustrating not being able to buy such a
simple small part. Not much of a service from the "Griffin" hey chaps?
Has anyone used a generic gasket strip? (you cut and shape your own)
available at Halfords.

Regards, Howie.

I agree about opening Saturday afternoon but unfortunately there is too
little demand to do it. I tried for 2 years and it cost me a fortune!

The regular parts staff already work 8-6 for five and a half days a week and
were reluctant to do six full days.

The only business I had were a few owners who had attempted a job that was
too much for them and wanted technical advice and also some
complicated/special order parts which they had broken whilst doing an easy
job!

The majoriy of our parts sales are through the workshop and into the motor
trade & accident repair trade and none of these want parts after midday on
Saturday/

This is a bit of a generalisation but the principle was true.

In the East Midlands we are blessed with a main dealer, Pentagon in Derby,
who are open until 8pm weekdays and till 6pm Saturdays. The spares people
are excellent, unlike the local 'Veg Mardy' who don't know their arse from
their elbow. Despite the latter being just around the corner, I would sooner
drive the 15 minutes to Derby and give my support to a main dealer who seems
to know what customer service is all about. (Mind you they did want Ł27.50,
half an hours labour, to press out a suspension arm bush and push in a new
one, so maybe it comes at a price!).
