Veterans/Memorial Day Poem, #79

"Thanks For The Memories"

Thanks for the memories,of raids on Germany
Across the cold North Sea
With blazing guns we fought the Huns for air Supremacy
How lucky we were

Thanks for the memories of Me 109's
Flaks guns on the Rhine
They did their bit and we were hit and ended our good times
How lucky they were

They knocked us right out of formation
We jumped and what a sensation, and now to sweat out the duration
We did have fun and now our work is done

So thanks for the memories of days we had to stay in Stalag 17-A
The cabbage stew which had to do, till Red Cross Parcel day
How hungery we were

Now thanks for the memories, of those who died afore
Defending those they love,
They did their share with lots to spare, it's them we're thinking of
"What memories they are"

This poem was written by my grandfather, John J. Cipriano Sr., while he was a
prisoner of war in East Germany during WWII.
