.......Lesley Kane, Ryanair?s head of sales and marketing, said the new routes
confirmed the airline?s continued commitment to the airport after a difficult
three years which she said were caused by a collapse in domestic air travel
and increases in Air Passenger Duty, the tax paid by passengers on all UK

It certainly has been a difficult period.
In the 12-month period to September 2011 compared to the corresponding
period ending September 2008 the airport experienced a passenger
decline of 1.07m / 43.6% according to CAA figures.
Another factor is that flown freight has experienced a substantial
decline and the airport is no longer Scotland's principal air cargo
operation, based on volume throughput.
With a long runway and a good rail / motorway link I sometimes wonder
if the airport's owners are banging the PIK drum loudly enough.

Or offering incentives available at a nearby airport from a massive route
development fund..

Or take a leaf out of my council's book.
When travelling in the Stirling / Larbert / Camelon / Falkirk area
earlier today the number of large 'Sparkling Edinburgh' billboards was
very noticeable. Good locations with graphics that were bright, punchy
and to the point. And this is advertising a series of events which
have attracted hordes of visitors from both home and abroad for many
years. The 2010 survey found that Edinburgh's Hogmanay attracted an
attendance of 250k yet the expense of publicising the 2011 event far
beyond the city has been recognised as a good investment.

I cannot recall the last time I saw any advertising that sought to
entice me to PIK.

If the Glasgow CG managed that over 3 days the vast expenditure so far
thrown at it would be justified.

In my younger days I used it to pick-up and drop off hire cars..
