I've heard that there is a well used unofficial beach at Marcross or
Monknash (South of Bridgend - V. Glam.). Can anyone tell me more please?

Usual long haul from anywhere to parc ( We are in Wales now) can be
dangerous as the tide can cut you off, very large gay prescence. Don't,
don't, DON"T sunbathe under the cliffs, they are very soft oollitic
limstone and shale and collapse with regular casualties. Was subject of
the usual " We can't walk the dog or take the children for a walk with
out being disgusted" ( odd use of the two terms "walk " in one sentence)
complaint by a wrinkly councillor a few years ago. Can be approached
from either Monknash or Southerndown , and is the piece on OS Map 170
called Traeth Bach ( Little Beach).

Monknash is listed by David Martin - grid reference SS898713. It sounds very
good: "mainly used by families, with a tremendous atmosphere".

It is there. It is certainly reasonably well used.

There are three possible ways to reach it. (assuming you have a car)

1. Park at Dunraven Bay (also known as Southerndown). Take the path
*away* from the bach by the car park until you reach the top of some
cliffs. Follow the footpath down these cliffs until you reach another
beach. Walk Eastwards along this beach ( a mixture of sand and rocks)
for about a mile until you pass a ladder coming down the cliffs on
your left. the naturist area is around and beyond the rocks in front
of you at this point.

2. (This is probably the easiest way physically) Park at Monknash.
This car park is a farm field, and is often full. Go down to the
beach, and turn right (West). Walk along this beach (all sand) for
about a mile, until you come to the rocky area mentioned above, from
the other side.

3. About half way between Southerndown and Monknash, there is a point
where a side road joins from directly inland, and a footpath starts
towards the beach. The footpath signpost says 1 and 1/2 miles, but I
think it is less than 1 mile. Follow this path until it ends at the
top of the cliff ladder mentioned in (1). Climb down the ladder, and
the naturist area is to your left (looking out to sea). This is
probably the most commonly used route.

Please be aware that there is sometimes a certain amount of sexual
activity here, particularly in the early evening, or on otherwise
quiet days. But there are also often families here.

Correct Mike - there is. It's on our places to visit list when next
down S.Wales. Described as a well used family beach. Thinking of
Val it's a mile walk from the car park some of which is steeply
downhill - which must make it even steeper uphill on the way back.

Location :- Monknash village is between Llanwit Major and St Brides
Major - use Junc 35 or 36 of M.4. The beach is actually called
Traeth Mawr. Car park down a lane from the village to New Mill Farm
(small charge). Turn right on beach and across some rocks to reach
beach part of which can become flooded at high tides.

David Martin reckons you can also walk from Southerdown (wherever that
might be) and if the beach gets flooded there are supposedly some
steps to escape up.

Some of above lifted from Coast and Country's Guide, some from third
party info - both of which are quite similar so it looks good.

It is there and it is a lovely spot but for heaven sake heed the
warnings about the tide and the cliffs. The Bristol channel has the
second biggest tidal range in the world so the vast expanse of beach
disappears VERY rapidly and the cliff escape route is a bit perilous in
itself. A set of tide tables are essential when planning a visit.

Now why didn't I think of that! (don't answer Marc!) :-)
Unlikely though.

Here's a story about some of my third party stuff. About 10-12
years ago Joy and I met someone at Morfa Dyffryn who is nowadays a
very good friend. He is probably the 'king' of the UK nude beach
doggers but that's another story. At that time he was spending
most summers touring the UK nude beaches in his camper van but
rent-collecting at Glyn's Field, Morfa Dyffryn during peak season and
is yet another example of the company that we keep!!!

At about this time I accidentally left my road atlas with him and
unfortunately it was the best part of a year before I saw him again
when he returned it. By now he had marked it up with every nude
beach that he knew of in the UK (plus a load of other stuff about
picnic areas and car parks but that is beside the point!!). Not only
that he had 'star-rated' them based on various criteria but written
directions to some on the blue sea areas

This was long before I had even heard of Coast and Country or Phil V.
and I doubt that this gent. has to this day.

That atlas has gone the way of all well used things but I still have
notes of some of the locations that we want to and have yet to visit.
This beach is one of them.

Is about 10-15 miles away, if it was that wonderful we would spend some
time there... The thing that no one seems to mention is the sewagae
treatmant plant in the River Ogmore which is about 3 miles or so
"upstream " from the main current that sweeps over both the Ogmore ,
Southerdown , Traeth bach Traeth Fawr and Llantwit Major beaches , there
is also an outlet at Llantwit Major. Whilst its a lot cleaner that it
was when I was lad ( at Ogmore in the 60's you didn't swim you more,
"went through the motions" ( some still with toilet paper attached))
I'm still not sure I would risk it.

How about getting together on a beach such as this next Saturday [12th], to
just bring some cans and meet others or maybe light a fire and have a barbie
as well. It would make a great change from all the bickering that has been
going on (that's relevant though - I haven't been following it, it wasn't my
business but I'd like it to stop). Anyone else interested - obviously
there's not much time but if we are willing enough it could be good and
break down barriers.

Judging by the response, maybe it wasn't such a daft idea - see not all us
men are stupid after all. You're right though, let's check the tide, the
weather and anything else relevant. How about April with warmer and longer
evenings? We don't know any of you but this seems to be an easier way [for

Welcome to the UK weather. You may find that April is Cold/wet/cloudy. But
there is sometimes the occasional day that is warm. April can be great for
