The Dead Chicken Windscreen Test

The British Aviation Authority used to test the
strength of windshields on planes using a device
that could fire out dead chickens at extremely
high speed.
The device was pointed at the aircraft's
windshield and if the chicken didn't break it, it
was assumed that the windshield would survive the
impacts of actual collisions with birds when in
flight.
British Rail had recently designed a new locomotive
and was testing various designs of windshields, so
they borrowed the device from the BAA.
Adjusting it to approximate the maximum speed of
the train, they loaded a dead chicken and fired it
at the first windshield design.
The chicken went straight through the windshield,
broke several components and left a huge dent in
the compartment door. Surprised by the result, they
asked a BAA official if they had done the test
correctly.
An engineer checked everything and suggested that
for their next test they defrost the chicken.

The train that they were testing this on was the the same as the Brisbane to
Rockhampton Tilt Train. They didn't make the same mistake!!

1) When did the chicken windscreen die?

2) What part did you take in its death?

3) How much restitution are you going to make?

You do reaalise that this story is untrue.

It was originally (at least as far as I know) told about Rolls Royce testing
aircraft engines. It was untrue then, as well.

Not sure if it is true or an "urban legend" - The way I heard it is that
Rolls Royce in Nottingham tested jet engines against bird strike by using a
"bird gun" which fired dead birds at an adjustable speed (up to several
hundred miles per hour) into a static test engine - simulating a high speed
collision with the rotor blades. It kinda makes sense - you don't want a 747
blowing up because of an engine exploding etc after sucking in a goose or
other large bird. Rolls Royce used dead chickens from the supermarket
because they were convenient to get and a large bird.
I understood that British Rail wanted to test their new high speed 125
trains for bird strike too - to make sure that if they hit a large bird at
full speed that it didn't go straight through the drivers window killing him
etc. They borrowed the gun from Rolls Royce and fired a FROZEN chicken at
their test train - and of course it went straight through the windshield and
caused further damage as it hurtled down the carriage.

Ref the use of birds by Rolls Royce and B.R, what did they do with the birds
after the testing. I really do hate to see good food go to waste.

Which reminds me of a true story from the nineties. Rhuddlan Borough Council
in Clwyd, North Wales purchased a second hand Sky Tower from the Glasgow
Garden festival to put on the promenade in Rhyl, as a tourist attraction.

Several weeks , due to local residents complaints about wind noise pollution
the borough engineers approached their counterparts in Glasgow to find out how
the Scots were able to solve the noise pollution problem.

The reply back was simple; they sold the problem tower to Rhuddlan Borough
Council.

Indeed; glass shards really add a certain zest to a pulverized carcass....

Heh.
"What are the meal choices, stewardess?" "Paté or hamburger."

I suppose a jet engine would make one hell of a food blender - it would
probably cook the bird too!
Just throw in a few extra ingredients.
Actually, you've just made me think - last time I order in-flight chicken
meals!
