Call for Proposals to Partner with UN-Habitat on a Hackathon on Urban Mobility Solutions

From: Andre Dzikus
Topic: Call for Proposals to Partner with UN-Habitat on a Hackathon on Urban Mobility Solutions
Date: August 03, 2012

Message:

Urban mobility has a vital impact on the economy of the city and lives and livelihoods of citizens. In many developing countries including the emerging economies, due to the growth of the urban population, private vehicle use, traffic congestion and poorly functioning public transport systems, urban dwellers, particularly the poor, face increasing problems in travelling to work and in accessing health, educational and social services. The lack of adequate space allocated for streets and public spaces has resulted in congested cities which do not favour pedestrians.

New ideas, better open solutions and innovative mechanisms are needed to respond to these challenges. As such, UN-Habitat is seeking organizations to partner with in conducting an Urban Mobility Solutions Hackathon. A Hackathon is an intensive marathon of brainstorming and programming, where software developers, designers and experts collaborate to create new tools for solving a set of problems.

The first research question would be to develop a system to calculate the percentage area of a city that is reserved for roads, streets and public space. The system should be based on open source solutions and freely available data sources such as OpenStreetmap, Google Earth Engine etc. Partners interested in joining forces with UN-Habitat in organizaing Hackathons are requested to kindly contact Kennedy Kamau at (kenned...@unhabitat.org)
