[…] can extend self, as when a tool or weapon allows us to do things of which we would otherwise be incapable. Possessions can also symbolically extend self, as when a uniform or trophy allows us to convince ourselves (and perhaps others) that we can be a different person than we would be without them (Belk, 1988, pág. 4).

Belk doesn't talk about brands, he only talks about objects or clothing (the uniform). But he affirms that the possession of an object, as in the case of a trophy, allows us to convince ourselves that we can be a different person than we would be without the possession of said object AND, most interestingly, it also has the capacity to convince others that we are such a person.

This statement is the starting point of our study. With the difference that we do not want to stay only in the concept object, but we want to talk about marked object. In our society, objects are increasingly similar and only brands can differentiate them. We will see, later, how the brand ends up contributing said added value.

Everyone has ever wondered who am I? And how am I ?, and they have felt the need to know which group they belong to. After these questions come the ones that interest us most for this study: how do I present myself to other people so that they identify me as I want them to? And finally, how can I identify who the other person is and what group they belong to?
