Hello,
FGPVD had a meeting with the Furniture Bank yesterday to solidify plans regarding the Recycling Event. I got a chance to pick Phyllis' brain who is in charge of Indiecycle which does the recycling.
We'll need to rent a truck, probably a twelve foot one, which must have a liftgate. We'll need it for two days so we can pick up the gaylords and palettes from Indiecycle on Friday September 23, then have it available in Boston on September 24th. Phyllis said the best way to run the event would be to park the truck at the dropoff point and put the ewaste directly into the gaylords. I didn't know what a gaylord is - it's a big foldable box that rests on a palette, kind of like watermelons are in those big boxes in the supermarket.
She said it's best to keep the gaylords labeled with the kind of ewaste so they don't have to be sorted through later - one for CPUs, one for keyboards and mice, one for monitors, and so on. She said they'll take TVs, cellphones, stuff like that, just no hazardous waste. She also said they always get some people who want to buy the stuff off of them - they always say no.
Once the dropoffs end, it's important to pick up the lot and make sure there's nothing sharp littering the pavement. Then we'll have to drive the truck back to Providence to the place where the Providence recycling event is happening. I'd say let's go from 9am til noon so we can get the truck back to Providence by 1:30 at the latest. That way they can load it up into their truck.
We'll need to give them an estimate of how much stuff we'll be expecting to give them. I don't think we can handle more than six gaylords full of stuff, which isn't a whole lot. At least it's a start though. They said they can't come up to Boston to run the event because they don't have certain licenses in Massachusetts, although they could have picked it up if they didn't already have to be in Providence.
So, there's the scoop for now. I'll look into pricing for trucks. What I might do is rent the truck, get the gaylords/pallets from them on Friday and park it overnight at my house, then drive it up the following morning.
Sounds like fun!
