This week Radio Wa rolls out children letter writing competition on the story line "If I were the president..." by closing date 17th December 2011, we had received 563letters from children aged 13 and below who participated in the competition... more are still being brought to the reception. Participants have been asked to outline their manifesto in less than 150 words and use either English or Luo.
Top ten winners will walk away with prices(not to be disclosed) and the child with the best manifesto will be crowned "The president". This is yet one of the initiatives we have come up with to motivate children to participate in radio programmes through the most cheapest element of communication they can to express themselves during this holidays...letter writing.
A team of four people which include two teachers are scanning through the letters and the winner shall be announced on Saturday 24th December 2011 during the children programme hosted by Phiona Ladwar.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Omara Ronnie

This sounds like a beautiful idea! I'm sure the kids will have many thoughts to inspire and challenge the adults in their communities.

May I take this opportunity to wish all of you in the Free Children Forum a joyful Christmas and a peaceful 2012, filled with love and wonderful radio programmes that will create a better world for children.

I miss you all, and look forward to the day when we can meet again.

Special New Year wishes from Johannesburg!
Fiona

Dear Ronie,

Greetings from UMDF! Following our visits to your station and sharing you made, we appreciate the effort into making the children programme more participatory using young hands to do the Show. This points to the change as a result of the training you had from Fiona Lloyd. This has also happened at other participating stations. We know you still face challenges in reaching and using more children in the programme. We encourage you to use such initiatives to increase children's love for radio and awareness  it brings to their young world.   The letter writing is a skill that is declining among many young people in this age of the sms, email, mobile technology.

Please keep us posted on the results, awards and feedback. It is also interesting to this forum if you document the winners, pictures and letters and include this in your report to UMDF. You can also share the results within the Rupiny Newspaper. I trust the editor will oblige to provide space for them in the children section and enable the wider readership understand how young people make meaning of such leadership responsibilities in their world.

Merry Christmas and restful festive season! :-)

Regards,

Mathias.
