The curiosity of two female strangers at the weekend led to a dramatic rescue of an eight-year-old girl, who had been tied up-side-down to the roof bars by her mother, apparently, as a punishment for allegedly stealing an earring worth Shs500

It was about 2:30pm when two women who were walking past the house heard a feeble voice crying for help in a locked room. The voice was of a pupil of Kabingo Primary School in Mpigi District. She had been tied at the legs and arms and left alone in that position for more than six hours, the police said.

Ms Rachael Nakiganda, a witness, said the women grew suspicious and called a police officer to ascertain what the matter was with the crying child in a locked room.

“The officers came and broke the padlock, only to find the child hanging on the bar in pain and could barely talk,” she said, adding that residents cut the ropes as police went after the child’s mother, who was at work.

The child was found with severe burns on her buttocks and hands, which she said were inflicted on her by her mother after accusing her of failing to do house chores. The child also had severe injuries around the wrist and legs and could barely talk. By last evening, she was still undergoing treatment and medical examinations.

Masaka Police community liaison officer Julius Musiime yesterday confirmed that they are holding the barmaid and food vendor, adding that they are waiting for a report from police surgeon before charging her with child torture, illegal confinement and causing bodily harm to a child

The victim’s mother confessed to the police to have tied her daughter on the bar as a punishment for stealing and being naughty.

“My daughter had become a nuisance to society because she picked whatever property found at people homes,” the mother said in her statement to police.

Child abuse is high in Masaka. At least 30 cases have been reported this year alone.

Thanks Charles for Posting this. i was about to do the same because i wanted us to debate this matter together because it actually falls within our intrest.

When i saw this story on TV and in the Papers thereafter,  i kept asking my self how a mother could choose to treat her "lovely" daugter in such a way. what's wrong with todays mothers?

That was harsh, inhumane, cruel and degrading most especially because it was done my some one who would be expected to shower the little girl with all the love and care that she needs to grow into a responsible citizen.

were there no alternative forms of purnishment?

Hi Sylvia and Charles

It is indeed such a sad story. It's important that the little girl's identity has been kept confidential, so as to "minimise harm" - especially when she has suffered so much already.

A couple of thoughts:

(1) This could be a very strong story with which to start a radio talk show about "punishing/disciplining children". How can caregivers discipline kids in a non-violent way? What are the rights of children, according to the law? What advice can child psychologists offer about the best way to teach kids the difference between "right and wrong"? Do parents/caregivers resort to violence because they have not been taught parenting skills? If so, what needs to happen in communities?

(2) It would also be good to follow up on this story later (whilst making sure, of course, not to reveal the child's identity). What will happen to the little girl? Who will take care of her now? How will the authorities make sure that she will be safe from abuse in future? And, what can be done to heal children psychologically when they have experienced such trauma?

Again, it's so good to see how our Gulu participants are using this forum to stay in touch and share ideas!

A challenge to all our forum members: what good news stories about kids have you come up with recently?

Best regards to all of you!
Fiona
