Bed wetting among some children is common. In Arua town this has attracted severe punishment for a children, who has not in any way found ways of defending her self against being punished by the stepmother. According to her friend who visisted radio Pacis, the child is asked every morning to take up her beddings and go to the stream to wash them up before egoing to school. She has in some cases been spanked severely.

A friend to her came up to the producer of the children's program and narrated the ordeal.
The question is then why should children who wet the bed be punished.

- IS THERE A WAY OUT TO HELP CHILDREN WHO WET BEDS?
- HOW CAN PARENTS, GUIDIANS AND ANY OTHER CARETAKER BE OF HELP TO SUCH CHILDREN?

We as radio Pacis have held shows in this respect and have sought, Medical, Parent and children views on this matter. And due to the injustice we have sought probation office interventions to the vice.

Attached are some audios of the child who visisted the station.
REACTIONS TO THIS ARE WELCOME.

Greetings, Anecho

What a sad story. I'm sure it happens more than we know, in many societies.

It's so good to raise the issue, and to help parents/caregivers to understand that children are not to blame for bed wetting. Sometimes it can be a sign of trauma, or there could be another physical/medical reason.

It was very touching to hear the young girl describe what had happened to her friend.

Did you have a positive reaction to your show?

All best
Fiona

Thanks for the appreciation. the show received over whelming reaction and according to the calls we got most parents confessed to punishing the chiildren for bed wetting and have now realised that the children who do it need more help than punishment. The other touching bit is that some parents confessed to punishing their children because they the parents were subjected to punishment when they were children and thought this was the way to go; but with medical explanations and other advice received for the show better knowledge is now at their disposal. We want to do follow up shows on different locations to determine if this has had an impact on the people.

That's so interesting, Anecho: especially the fact that parents were able to speak about their own childhood, and the kind of punishment they were subjected to.

It just proves that violence goes in cycles - but that those cycles can be broken with understanding and compassion. The power of radio!!! It would never be possible to create such a space for dialogue on TV, I think. Radio is really such a great way for people to explore very personal (often painful) issues .... and to find healing.

I hope Anecho's story will inspire other members of our group!

BED wetting was my big problem as a child. Actually, i stop very late. I discovered later that my problem was deep sleeping. This affects many children but as they grow up they move out of deep sleep zones and begin to feel urine and wake up and urinate.

Thanks Sam for this. Hope to see you soon again.
