If it's freshly exposed to oxygen, watch it for a few days as it slowly changes color to look like rosewood. The purple fades to a deep red brown sometimes. |
I had never heard of Purpleheart cedar until I saw Russ making something on his lathe with it (I forget what it was... a candleholder?). I saw a fallen branch in the woods near my house a few days ago and could see the purple inside and that it smelled like cedar, so I cut a couple branches (didn't want to cut the whole thing b/c it's not technically on my property) and started making handles for a bunch of old files and other tools I have sitting around, handle-less. Just thought it was cool because I wouldn't have known what it was or thought of woodworking with it before seeing Russ working with it.

Holly is a pretty bone white. Poplar is an attractive yellow grey but didn't take stain well. Old structures around here used pre-blight chestnut that could be worth a fortune if the owner hasn't heard of the chestnut blight. Always look for burls, they can go for $100/lb. Birds eye maple can be found around here too. Anything that's deadfall will probably also be spalted, a fungal infection that adds attractive black lines to the wood.
