Hybrid Car Rally for Efficiency!

We have one more opportunity to make a difference on energy efficiency
this session. Keep reading for an update on the Va. legislative
session and an important event in Richmond!

Through efficiency, the General Assembly had an extraordinary
opportunity this year to boost Virginia's economy, lower electricity
rates, and eliminate the need to build costly and polluting power
plants in the near future. While the strongest efficiency bill,
sponsored by Sen. McEachin, lost by one vote in committee, legislators
did pass two bills that move Virginia towards a more efficient energy
future.

The bills -- SB 1248 (Northam) and HB 2506 (Pollard) -- will help
"level the playing field" by making investments in efficiency as
profitable as investments in new generation. The bills also make sure
that utilities are only given credit for efficiency investments if
they reduce the total amount energy consumed.

While the target of reducing energy consumption 19% by 2025 through
efficiency measures was stripped from the bills, Governor Kaine has
said he still stands behind the 19% standard he has been calling for
this session. Now is our chance to support the governor and ask him to
re-insert the target as an amendment before legislators reconvene in
April!

On Saturday, March 21st, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network will
host a parade of hybrid cars around the Capitol Building in Richmond.
We'll decorate our cars with our message to Gov. Kaine and
legislators: Efficiency is good for Virginia. We support Governor
Kaine in re-inserting the 19% target!

Will you join us? We just need two hours of your time -- and your
beautiful car -- at noon on March 21st. @f you or anyoen you know has
a hybrid car and is interested in joining us. Please register at

An independent study by the American Council for an Energy Efficient
Economy (ACEEE) shows that a 19% reduction in Virginia's projected
energy use by 2025 is achievable. And just this December, Governor
Kaine's Commission on Climate Change also recommended the 19%
standard.

Join us as we drive home our message to Virginia legislators:
Efficiency is good for Virginia, re-instate the 19% target! Please
email me at Lau...@chesapeakeclimate.org if you can participate!

Cheers!
