to Fredericksburg Green Drinks
When: Wednesday, Sept 16th, 6pm-8pm
Where: Amy's Cafe, 103 W Cambridge Str (under the Rt 1 Falmouth
Bridge)
Who: me
What: Team in Training (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society)

For those that haven't heard, I was diagnosed with lymphoma in June.
I am passing off the mantle of 'sender of email reminders' to our good
friends, Linda Dort and Barry Robinson. Linda is one of the very few
realtors in the region with the National Realtor Association's Green
Designation. Barry is the owner of Servispros (and the Bug Box), and
extremely well versed in green building, among many other things
green. Together they will be giving Green Drinks FXBG a much needed
boost as I have been slacking the past few sessions.

The type of lymphoma I have is "anaplastic large cell, T-cell type,
stage IV." Kind of a mouthful. I have been undergoing chemotherapy
for the past two months, and the doctors tell me that it's going
well.

Along those lines, I have been able to maintain my training routine in
preparation of the Marine Corps marathon. Getting a little more
involved in running, I learned about the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's
Team in Training. Team in Training was formed in 1988 to help raise
funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I have joined TNT as both
a runner (participant) and as a cancer survivor (knock on wood) to
help raise awareness. So while lymphoma awareness may in the top ten
list of sustainable concepts, I'm going to be a little selfish and
talk about Team in Training.

Green Drinks FXBG has meant a great deal to me over the past two
years. What makes it so special is the people - all of you. I have
met some amazing folks at Green Drinks and have heard some really
inspirational messages. We've learned a lot, whether about the
Rappahannock, green building, alternative energy or even manatees - at
least I learned a lot. I hope you did, too.

I tried to follow a few rules of my own devising. I never wanted a
sponsor for Green Drinks. I was always worried that it would give
things a 'corporate' feel. I've been to green sessions in other
locations that don't mind having sponsors, and they were enjoyable and
entertaining. So maybe I was wrong about that. I tried to make sure
that speakers were either some kind of not-for-profit organization. I
didn't want anyone hawking their services to make a buck. I still
think it should be that way. I didn't want people to have to pay to
participate - no cover charges. After around two thousand dollars out
of my pocket later, I'll confess I've re-thought that one. There
should be a cover charge, or just leave it up to attendees to get
something to eat if they want a bite. All in all, its been a learning
experience. A fun one.

I hope you give Linda and Barry and give them as much support as you
gave me. I still plan on making sessions, so I hope to see you all
there. Please foward this to your friends, I'd love to see a big
crowd at this session.
