Withits rarity, the Richard Mille RM 67-02 Sprint Van Niekerk stands as a symbol of exclusivity. While the colours differ both RM 67-02s are identical in materials and movement. The coloured front and back plates of the cases are made of Quartz TPT, while the black case bands are made of Carbon TPT. Both are carbon composites made by North Thin Ply Technologies (NTPT), a Swiss materials specialist, with the banded appearance the result of the carbon fibre layers and coloured resin binders.

Both new models are based on the extra-flat RM 67-01, and equipped with the same in-house CRMA7 movement that has a rotor with carbon composite spokes and a white gold outer mass. As with many movements used in Richard Mille watches, the base plate and bridges of the CRMA7 are titanium.

Van Niekerk has now completed his disciplines at the IAAF World Championships, where he unsurprisingly won the 400 m race on August 8 in 43.98 seconds. He had also entered the 200 m race, where experts gave him a fighting chance of emerging victorious as Usain Bolt decided not to run this discipline during his swan song event. However, van Niekerk was defeated in the August 10 thriller final by a most surprising opponent: Ramil Guliyev of Turkey, who crossed the finish line two hundredths of a second ahead of the young South African.

Richard Mille has two more outstanding ambassadors competing in the London championships aside from van Niekerk: Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, who wore his RM 59-01 Tourbillon Yohan Blake, and new brand partner Mutaz Essa Barshim, a world-renowned high-jumper and Olympic medalist representing Qatar. Always on the cutting edge, Richard Mille has a green version of the RM 67-02 ($131,500, top right) that pays tribute to South African sprinter Wayde Van Niekerk, who is putting the watch through his paces on the track. The special edition is one of a series of models honoring elite athletes in the colors of their countries, with a hand-painted rendition of each flag across the dial.

The RM 67-02 originally launched last summer, and now Richard Mille has created three new production examples that offer somewhat more subtle expressions of the same incredibly light and thin automatic sports watch. Just as with the original pair of 67-02s, Richard Mille has connected each of these new versions with an athlete that can test (and likely prove) just how tough and sporty these wild watches really are. Coming in at 38.7mm wide and an astounding 32 grams, including the strap, the RM 67-02 should not be taken as lightly as it wears.

As a guy who loves a simple, beat-up dive watch, every opportunity I've had to experience a Richard Mille in person remains firmly stamped in my memory. They are amazing things to behold and they seem to break the laws of physics when held in your hand. They don't seem to weigh ... enough? The RM 67-02 is one I'd love to try for myself, and I really rather like the more reserved and uniform look (relative to an RM) of the Ogier version.

While its $120,500 price point will ensure the RM 67-02 remains more of an idea than a reality for most watch enthusiasts, even if I can't have one, I do like that such watches exist. Richard Mille is an unapologetically modern endeavor in a world of vintage-inspired design and old-school thinking. Bold, tech-forward, and always delightfully high-end, these three new versions are strong additions to the RM 67-02 line up and offer a more subdued take on the lightest of automatic offerings from Richard Mille.

The case is crafted in Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT, composite materials exclusive to Richard Mille possessing exceptional shock resistance. The slimness of the 7.8 mm bezel/caseband/caseback assembly in no way reduces its physical properties, nor its ability to handle any situation that might occur while engaging in high-level sports.

The tight, taut lines of the rotor, crafted of Carbon TPT and white gold, the bridges and the DLC- coated grade 5 titanium baseplate of the new in-house extra at CRMA7 calibre sharply underscore the sporty quality of this timepiece. The at least two hours of machining time required to achieve such extreme skeletonisation of the baseplate are themselves made possible by hundreds of hours devoted to programming and adjusting specialised machinery.

The going train, optimised by adoption of an involute pro ling of gears that produces a 20 angle of pressure, ensures excellent transmission of power to the barrel thanks to its variable-inertia balance, thus guaranteeing constant performance for 50 hours.

For superlative wearing enjoyment of the RM 67-02, Richard Mille has equipped these timepieces with their new comfort strap. Entirely seamless and non-slip, the strap is highly elastic, allowing it to perfectly t the contours of each wrist, adapting to individual morphology. As the lightest strap the brand has ever created, it has helped lighten the RM 67-02 to just 32 grams. This makes the RM 67-02 the lightest automatic watch of the Richard Mille collection.
