Trail Intern - Larimer County Conservation Corps

The Larimer County Conservation Corps (LCCC) offers positions to young adults to spend a season serving on meaningful conservation projects throughout the Front Range of Colorado. The LCCC is based in Fort Collins, Colorado and is an accredited corps through the Colorado Youth Corps Association and The Corps Network.
This new internship position works directly with the National Park Service trails program on a 5-6 person trail crew to assist with a variety of trail building and maintenance activities. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) and may include weekend and holiday work. Park housing will be provided by Rocky Mountain National Park.
The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This schedule may be adjusted due to holidays, training, weather, logistical needs, or other unforeseen circumstances. Training dates will be coordinated and communicated prior to the start of employment. This is a temporary position expected to last 12 weeks, from June 1 through August 21.
What you'll be doing:
- Perform trail maintenance and construction activities such as clearing brush and fallen logs from trail corridors.
- Assist with construction, repair, and cleaning of trail drainage features including log and rock drains.
- Help construct and maintain trail structures such as retaining walls, steps, turnpikes, causeways, cribbing, riprap, and trail tread.
- Use hand tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, McLeods, Pulaskis, rock bars, hammers, chisels, axes, and hand saws.
- Carry tools, materials, and supplies to and from work sites, often over long distances.
- Assist with backcountry operations, including working from remote trail camps for extended periods when assigned.
- Practice minimum-impact camping techniques and proper food storage to reduce wildlife conflicts.
- Assist other park maintenance crews or projects on an occasional basis as workload and scheduling allow.
