Say you're in college having a night in together with your three friends: Alice, Bob, and Cindy. It's getting late, and the conversation turns to what you'd like to have for dinner. Thus begins one of the most awkward, meaningless conflicts imaginable.

Each of you has your own preference, but none of you really care strongly enough to speak aloud and thus impose your will upon the group. The result is a mix of "uhh"s, "hmm"s, and general awkward silence. Cindy attempts to break the silence by suggesting something nice, but she's too soft-spoken to get her point across and Bob, the only one who clearly hears her, isn't really in the mood for what she suggests anyway. This war of politeness continues until Alice, with a loud sigh, decides that you're all just going to get pizza because it's cheap and easy (and really, you can't go too far wrong with pizza).

The difficulties don't end there, of course. The topic then turns to how many pizzas should be ordered. No one has any idea of how much pizza the others want, of course, so this turns out to be even harder to answer. Instead, you all start discussing your preferences for what toppings you would enjoy. As you go around the group, you remember that Cindy enjoys pineapple on pizza and so Bob is already typing that into the ordering app on his phone. Cindy tries to explain that while she does enjoy pineapple on pizza she isn't really in the mood for it today and would prefer something else, but she is too soft-spoken to get her point across and everyone else is already listing their preferences over the top of her. Bob settles things by ordering one pizza for everyone... except, as he realises as soon as he has confirmed the order, he was so busy figuring out everyone else's preferences that he forgot to order one for himself.

The pizzas arrive and it turns out that the store made a mistake with your pizza and added an extra topping you won't eat. Bob is rather upset with this and wants to ring up the store, but no one else is bothered enough (including you) so the dispute goes nowhere.
In the end Bob eats most of Cindy's pineapple pizza, Alice and Cindy share your miscooked pizza, and you have half of Alice's pizza before realising you weren't quite hungry enough to have a full pizza anyway.

The result is an unmitigated disaster. No one could agree on anything at any point in the discussion and so relied upon shaky consensus built upon no one wanting to be the one to speak up. Adding insult to injury, despite being the only one who actually got what she wanted, Alice's pizza is the only one to have leftovers at the end. Yet somehow, none of you are all that bothered; after all, you really can't go too far wrong with pizza.

Regardless, to ensure this never happens again, all future rules must include a demonstration of leadership. You and your friends are clearly in need of one.

Valid. +0.5 style. I don't know if I've ever read an post that sounded more like a convoluted math story problem, not that I have a problem with story problems...

I know, right? Like I feel let down somehow because at no point was the puzzle to solve presented. Who enjoyed the anchovies?
