Of course the line of sight is blocked by foliage now, but when the bread basket was first constructed, one could stand outside the real gate and look through the hole in it, and then through the hole in the imaginary gate at the opposite corner of the square enclosure, and on a clear day one could see the bronze statue of Piers Anthony which stands atop the oval mesa on an island in the ancient river that marks the boundary between the imaginary plain (where the wild plantains grow) and Xanth.
You can still see the statue from the imaginary gate, as the blue brick road that extends in a straight line southwest from the bread basket is wide enough, and the oval mesa far enough away, that the branches of the trees of the troubled forest do not block the view.
