I upgraded from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 19 (!!! how do they manage to release sixteen major versions in just three years?), and now find that the arrow keys scroll the page by much more than they used to. Previously a single downarrow press would scroll down by about 1 line of text; now it scrolls 2 or 3 lines. That is rather annoying.

I suppose there must be some setting in about:config I can adjust to get the single-line scrolling back, but where? Searching for "scroll" in the list doesn't turn up anything promising (which works).

(I've seen various places on the web recommend the "Yet another smooth scrolling" extension, but it doesn't do quite the right thing -- it lets me control the amount of scroll alright, but even if I turn its smoothness controls all the way down to 0, it stills seems to scroll each line in two quick steps rather than immediately).

First, you'll want to adjust the toolkit.scrollbox.verticalScrollDistance flag in about:config. This should be the scrolled distance. My current default value seems to be 3 (which would match your suspicion).

Is there a way to enable use of the arrow keys (up, down, left, right) to scroll up and down through the content of the active window? I've never used a Windows application before that would not utilize the arrow keys to scroll through text, but it doesn't work for me in the Windows version of Accordance 12.

I realize I didn't explain myself well in my original post. What I was getting at is, that in other Windows apps, when viewing textual content (or a mix of text and graphics), using the up and down arrow keys will scroll all the content on the screen, up or down by just one line. This often comes in handy when wanting to keep most of the current content on the screen, but be able to scroll the content up or down by just a line (or two or three) in order to view a few lines of the previous or following text in visual context with what you've just been reading on the screen. I.e. each press of the arrow key moves the content up or down one line, and holding the arrow key down will result in a continuous one-line-at-a-time scroll until you release the arrow key. As far as I can tell, with accordance, my choices are: 1) Use the pgup/pgdn keys to scroll a full page at a time, or 2) use a mouse/trackpad to scroll less than a page at a time, or 3) change the preference as you noted, but then the arrow keys result in a jump to the previous or next article, which may be less than a page, or potentially, several pages.

I use a laptop (on my lap 99.9% of the time) so rarely have occasion to use an external mouse, so I can't compare navigation results on that. All my navigation is done via the touchpad or keyboard and via the keyboard I get the same results as you.

In all fairness to OakTree, I should note that Windows apps do seem to have more discretion in how the arrow keys are used than they take with other control/navigation keys, but there are also sometimes ways of changing what the keys do to better fit a person's preferences. Accordance does have a lot of options for customizing keyboard shortcuts, but no way as far as I can tell to change the behavior of the arrow keys. It's not a show-stopper, but it would be nice if arrow-key behavior could be modified.

When I'm on any website and I click anywhere in the website there is a blinking bar - sorry, don't know the technical term - like you would find in any new document waiting for the next character to appear to the left of it. It's almost as if FF - not the super-team - want me to add test to any page I find but it is just a weird mistake.

That behavior is characteristic of having Caret Browsing turned on. Tap the F7 key one time, then test to see if things have returned to normal. The F7 key is an off/on key for Caret Browsing: _with_arrow_keys_no_longer_works

I frequently work with very long (200+ page) PDF service manuals where multiple people will be using the same laptop together. I tend to use 2 fingers on the touch pad to scroll through the document but my colleagues tend to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll.

If I scroll with the touch pad to a particular page and the next guy uses the arrow keys, it will immediately revert to page 1 of the document for him. Is there a way to have all of the scrolling continue from the currently viewed page?

Not quite right. The way we work is that I will get my laptop out and open the manual. I will scroll through using the touchpad while reading through a procedure. I will stop and get up to check something on the machine but leave the manual open on my laptop. My coworker will come behind me and try to scroll up/down on my laptop without closing/reopening the document, just picking up where I left off. As soon as he hits the up/down arrow, the PDF instantly goes to the first page.

If you wish to enable the scrolling by default for everyone for the PDF from start, you can navigate to Edit>Preferences>Accessibility>Override Page Display - Always use Page Layout Style - Single Page Continuous.

Ok, so I found it. One tip I kept seeing said to turn on the on-screen keyboard. There's an icon in the bottom right that pops up a keyboard, and there was no scroll lock on that. I finally went into the main search of the computer and searched for keyboard. On-screen keyboard was one of the options, so I selected it, expecting it to be the same keyboard that popped up when I selected the icon on the main screen. Well, it wasn't. Lo and behold, I found the scroll lock on there. Finally! Success!

Thank you Jay!! I also just got a new company HP Elitebook and was going NUTS trying to figure out how the heck I turned it on in the first place. I knew I hit some combination of keys but wow! Thanks again!

I was using Illustrator CS5 (Windows 10) when something strange happened. The selection got stuck on the menu bar at the top. With the arrow keys I could only move between the menu tabs. I managed to position the cursor on the workspace, but then I realised I could not use the arrow keys to scroll up and down the file. I could still move objects with the arrow keys in Illustrator and the scroll function worked fine on Chrome and other applications.

I have tried closing/rebooting AI. I have restarted my laptop. I have checked Preferences > General > Keyboard increments (set at 3528mm). I suspect that I may have pressed the wrong keys and unwittingly locked the scroll function of the arrow keys. I have tried looking for a solution on various webboards, but I have not found the solution to my problem.

To scroll the page -pipe-fittings/pipe-fittings/pipe-tubing-and-fittings/plumbing/ecatalog/N-qu1?searchRedirect=products till it reaches the bottom of the page where it will find an element with text as View More and then click the element until the element is not available you can use the following solution:

I do not want to have my hands leave the traditional typing position to navigate Gmail via shortcuts. I can do everything I need to do except scroll through really long e-mails. For that it requires my right hand drop down to navigate the arrow keys on my keyboard, which are off to the side. This is annoying.

Using the spacebar to scroll down and tab-spacebar is pretty much the only portable way to scroll in a browser. Make sure that the focus is not on an entry like a check box, text box, or button, and then push space - tada! The page scrolls until the last couple lines at the bottom of the screen are at the top.

Hey guys, I am creating a website that is essentially a sidescroller, a 1 page website that is horizontally scrolling. I want there to be as little confusion as possible, so when a user presses the arrow down key I want the page to scroll right (forward 1 section id) and when they press up I want to go back up 1 section id. I also want to listen for mousewheel scroll down and up respectively.

It seems when going left and right its always going the same direction? Never left always right? I tried using -100% and got this effect but if one is *100% and other is *-100% then the *100% action causes a white screen out of the width view.

I personally like the idea of periodical mouse abandoning for the health issues. The more moves for the right hand the better.
And after your post I decided to create such macros.
For example when I am pressing [ctrl-arrow right] an external program just moves mouse over right horizontal bar border - clicks LMB one time - and then moves mouse where it where. The same pattern with left/up/down.

You can try this method

I usually navigate between tracks with the arrow keys to jump from track content to track control, left arrow, then down or up arrow to the track you want, then right arrow to go into the track content context again.
From here I use the + and - keys on the numeric keyboard to fast forward or backward as already mentioned.
