Hello everyone

We're back to the usual reading group routine after Nigel Gibson's astonishingly well attended seminar. There's clearly considerable interest in Fanon here in Grahamstown.

The reading for this week is 'The Pitfalls of National Consciousness', the third chapter from The Wretched of the Earth. It's quoted by everyone from the ANC Youth League, in today's City Press, to Moeletsi Mbeki in his call for a productive black capitalism and all kinds of people and groups who can't envisage an emancipatory capitalism. If anyone is looking for a good reflection on this chapter, and the larger book in which it is set, Ato Sekyi-Otu's brilliant book, Fanon and the Dialectic of Experience, is probably the best place to start.

Also, you may be interested to now that Van Schaik books are now carrying Black Skin, White Masks; The Wretched of the Earth and both of the attempts to think Fanon in contemproary South Africa i.e. Michael Neocosmos's Fanonian analysis of xenophobia in South Africa and Nigel Gibson's new book. The Neocosmos book is priced excessively high but the first edition of the text is online for free at: http://codesria.org/IMG/pdf/Neocosmos_From_Foreign_Native_to.pdf

The Pitfalls of National Consciousness is online at the Thinking Africa blog which is here: http://thinkingafricarhodesuniversity.blogspot.com/
