Hello Beekeepers,

Since the Coronavirus continues to keep us apart we are making plans to hold our next scheduled meeting ( July 29th at 7 pm) via Zoom.  You will receive a separate email containing a link for you to join the meeting.

In the meantime, all the rainy days of spring have given way to the hot and humid days of summer.  By now you have likely pulled your honey supers or plan to do so soon.  With the honey harvested and varroa multiplying exponentially in the hive, we need to know what a colony's mite load is and have a plan for how and when to treat or not treat.  As you consider your plan of action, I thought I'd provide these two resources that outlines how to sample, options for treating, and how to factor in the heat of summer when you are considering your treatment options.

Regardless of the method you use to sample your bees for mite loads, please do monitor your colonies and take the necessary steps to help your bees manage varroa and the viruses they pass on to your bees.  Once infected by the virus, our bees become sicker and sicker, leading to colony failure.......often during the winter leaving the beekeeper to wonder what happened.  The "event" that happened was way back up stream. NOW is the time to count and make a plan for taking action....

Stay safe and stay hydrated while counting mites....

Terry

Thanks everyone.

It isn’t my first time, they make a mess.  But what happened is

I added a box too soon, and they couldn’t defend well enough.

Anyway, I lost the hive but I have two others that need splitting

Anyway!

Looking forward to the zoom meeting!

Susan R.
