Hello Class,
Those in attendance Sunday heard my proposal that our class take up a donation to help supply critical needs for the bunkhouse under construction at the community center on Rattlesnake Ridge in Appalachia (KY). First let me explain why this project is so critical to the area.
Barbara and Hilton Duncan are an integral part of the Rattlesnake Ridge community who lovingly supply ministry in many areas: spiritual needs, emotional needs, clothing, food, library, GED, and home repair/ construction. But they are only one couple who cannot do everything. Therefore, they rely on mission teams, like CCC, who are eager to help but face logistical obstacles in doing so. Rattlesnake Ridge is one hour away from Somerset, KY, the site of the nearest hotels and restaurants. There are groups (especially youth groups) clamoring to come help but they just cannot overcome the expense for food and lodging. Then there is the travel back and forth that cuts into the time they can spend serving.
The bunkhouse will serve many purposes. A minimized cost for lodging will more readily allow these groups to come. Meals can be prepared on site and even shared with locals. No more daily commute allows for more time to do God’s work. And then there is relationship – so critical in reaching these people and gaining their trust to let us get closer to their inner self. Imagine a kickball game with the youth after dinner, a campfire at dusk with songs, stories, laughter and God’s presence in this peaceful place. These activities do not currently happen with the current constraints of teams lodging away from The Ridge. And best of all, the usage fee will provide an income stream for the center.
This cause is so dear to the hearts of many in this class and I truly believe we can help complete this dream that has been just a concept for so long. I have attached the list of needs reflecting some that are already covered and others that are not. I personally challenge this class to pray for the successful completion of the bunkhouse and to consider making a donation. I would at least like to cover the 20 light fixtures as Jesus so often spoke of “the light of the world.” These lights will shine further away from the bunkhouse than you will imagine. And if I’m right I think we can even do more than that. A smaller team is going to The Ridge Oct 11-13 to do some work on the bunkhouse and whatever else is needed by the Duncans. I would like to be able to advise them that we have raised funds for certain items and hopefully be able to provide installation while there.
I will be away this Sunday but I’d like to designate two Sundays, Sep. 22nd and 29th for collecting donations. Alfred/Julia can accept your gift and if you want to write a check please make it payable to ICM (Integrated Community Ministries) – they are a non-profit organization so your cancelled check can suffice for tax purposes.
You have no idea how much finishing out the bunkhouse will benefit this ministry. God is good – really good!
Yours in Christ,
Larry
