Hi 5th Grade Parents of my ELA class,
Just wanted to let you know that we have been studying the Revolutionary War and the causes that lead to it. And the issue of slavery came up in conversation. Today, we watched one of the Scholastic Dear America Videos. The books are widely popular and available in my classroom.
The video dealt with life on a plantation. There was one scene that saddened a few of my students, in where a slave owner whipped a slave. It was done very tactfully, appropriate for this age group, but nevertheless, a few kids took it to heart.
We talked about how all Ancient Civilizations and time periods in history have darkness to them, just as they have light and periods of inventions and innovations. It's good to know that both sides make up our history and that knowing our ancestors mistakes will help us move towards not making them again- we hope.
If you have any questions let me know. I'd be happy to chat with you.
Best wishes,
Ms. Garcia
Ms. Hartel, please forward to the Italian parents for me.
