Dear Franklin Families,
This is Principal Atikian with your Sunday night message for the week of September 21st.
Thank you to the families who came out Friday night to the Family Book Expo and a big thank you to the amazing volunteers. The Book Expo is far from over! Classrooms will shop all this week. Shopping Schedules went home in last week’s Thursday folders. Students will come with their teachers and be able to choose and purchase books in both their target language and English. Please send your child to school with cash if you’d like them to purchase books. The books range from $3 to $30 dollars. You are also welcome to come to the Book Expo during times that classes are scheduled. Just make sure to let the teacher know you are coming and sign in at the office. Remember to pick up a copy of the Principal’s Book Club book. It didn’t make it in by Friday, but should be in early this week. Thank you for supporting your Franklin PTA.
Friday is our first Awards Assembly and Spirit Day of the Year. The awards assembly begins at 8:15 AM on the playground. This year instead of Pizza with the Principal, students will have extended recess with the Principal. I’m looking forward to spending time with students and being active with them. For Spirit Day, students may wear any Franklin T-Shirt or our school colors of Red, White, Navy Blue or Khaki. T-shirts will be on sale at the Flag Pole Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Have you notice people wearing bee outfits at school? The buzz is about the Adult Spelling Bee, Sip and Spell. Did you hear about the Franklin Parent who sent out one email this week to his family, friends and coworkers and raised $415 in one afternoon? That was just ONE parent! What if we all participated? We are not asking for parents to donate the money themselves; We are asking for you to send out one email about Franklin Magnet and its awesome and unique language programs. Send the email to everyone you know telling them how your child sings in French, writes in German, talks in Spanish or reads in Italian. It’s easy and painless. Just send one email to everyone you know.
Example Emails:
Hi Friends:
"My child attends FRANKLIN MAGNET, a public school that offers French, Italian, German and Spanish. It is awesome to have them read, sing, write and play in another language. It’s a true gift.
We are asking for a little help ($5 or $10) that will go to programs like music, gardening and newspaper club. Please give what you can. A little goes a long way if everyone joins in. To find out more, go to crowdrise.com/sipandspell."
“Our wonderful public school is raising money to support our language immersion programs, where <INSERT CHILDS NAME> is learning <INSERT TARGET LANGUAGE>. Each language program has a team in our first ever adult spelling bee, so please support my <PICK ONE: GERMAN, FRENCH, ITALIAN, SPANISH> team before October 10! To find out more, go to crowdrise.com/sipandspell.”
Have a fabulous Sunday night, Remember to Be SMART, and I will see you tomorrow morning before 8:05 AM. Goodbye!

Dear STAR parents at Franklin Magnet,
Thank you for supporting your children with after-school arts enrichment classes through the STAR program. I personally really enjoy offering the kids enlightening activities to partake in after school. Session one will culminate this Friday, October 16 and resume on Monday, October 26th. Next week we will be completely off. Two session classes (RockSTAR, Theater, Soccer and Violin) will resume also on the 26th, as I extended session two by a week so all the classes will be covered. Although I would like to continue without a gap it is virtually impossible for the program has grown exponentially. I will spend the week cleaning up the books, processing refunds, and as the new registrations come in, keep track and clarify any glitches within the system. Again thank you very much for a wonderful start to the year and your whole-hearted support for enrichinment education. Frankin Magnet is really a special school and you are a great group of parents. As usual please feel free to call or email with any questions.
Look for the brochures to be sent home with your child next Tuesday, October 20th and online registration will begin on October 21st at 10:00 am.
Sincerely wishing you all the best,
Maika Kusama (Site Director)

Dear Franklin Families,
This is Principal Atikian with your message for the week of January 18th.
I hope you have enjoyed your three-day weekend in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. This coming week is Yellow Ribbon Week, which focuses on a positive school climate, violence and bully prevention, and increased student engagement. Teachers will be reminding students of our Be SMART expectations and how to be a Bucket Filler. Students are also welcome to share and document Acts of Kindness in a photograph, drawing, or writing and hand it into the office.
We are in desperate need of host families for our Amity Interns for next year. BFEF will be sending information home about host family expectations. We can only request interns who have a host family secured, and we need to send in names by the end of January. Please consider supporting this very special program that greatly supports our teachers and our dual language programs and thank you to those families who have hosted in the past and are hosting now. Your generosity benefits the whole school.
If you have a child entering kindergarten in August 2016, please remember to apply for the lottery by January 31st to secure your spot for an incoming sibling! Contact Ana Jones (ajo...@gusd.net or 818-243-1809) immediately if you have not already received a sibling verification email or if you need help with the application.

Newspaper Club will start February 10th and will meet every Wednesday for 12 weeks from 2:45 to 3:45 PM. Applications are due January 27th and must include a teacher recommendation. Please contact Mr. Partika (rpar...@gusd.net) with any questions.
Friday the 22nd is our Family Fun Night at Barnes and Noble at the Americana. Come join me for a trolley ride starting at 4:30 PM and then enjoy listening to Franklin teachers read their favorite books on the third floor starting at 5 PM. I will also be introducing my next book club book, and it will be available for purchase. Cookies and milk will be served at the end of the evening. Franklin will receive a portion of the profit from the Barnes and Noble receipts handed in during that week. More information will go home in this week’s Thursday folders. Thank you to Juli Black for helping to coordinate this special event.
Have a peaceful evening, remember to Be SMART and be at school before 8:05 tomorrow morning. Goodbye!
Dear Franklin Families,
This is Principal Atikian with a Special Message:
We are in desperate need of Amity Intern Host Families for the 2016/2017 school-year. We must have host families in place prior to inviting the interns to our school. We must submit the request for the number of interns to Amity by the end of NEXT WEEK, January 29th. Please read the attached letter regarding Host Families and consider supporting this very special program that greatly supports our teachers and our dual language programs. SILENT AUCTION: We're excited to announce that we will be holding our 6th annual Silent auction and gala at The Castaway in Burbank on Saturday, March 12, benefiting the Ben Franklin Elementary Foundation (BFEF)! Even if you are not able to attend the event, many great items will be available through the online auction the week before. Now, we need your help in getting great auction items! We are asking every family to get or donate one item. That's just ONE! You can donate goods or services, OR ask for donations from businesses you frequently visit. Ask your favorite restaurant for a dinner for two, ask a sports team or theater for tickets, or ask for a donated class at your kids' enrichment program. Maybe your hairdresser, gym or chiropractor would donate their services. They'll be glad to promote their businesses to our school community. The donation request letter and donation submission form is attached to this email. If you want to check out previous donations to get more ideas, go to https://www.biddingforgood.com/auction/item/browse.action?auctionId=221548657

In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association (the plaintiffs), filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) alleging widespread, systemic non-compliance by local educational agencies with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504. The suit also alleges that the CDE fails to monitor, investigate, and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law. The CDE denies these allegations and is actively defending the litigation.
As part of the litigation discovery process, the plaintiffs have requested numerous documents as well as student data collected and stored by the CDE. Many of the requested documents and data stored in the CDE databases contain personally identifiable information (PII) of children, including children with disabilities, children who requested an assessment or who were assessed for special education eligibility, and children who are attending or who have attended a California school at any time since January 1, 2008. Although the CDE has contested the production of such information, the court at this juncture has ordered the CDE to produce to plaintiffs’ legal counsel documents and data that contain student PII. Included in the court’s order to produce documents and data is a Protective Order prohibiting the plaintiffs and their legal counsel from disclosing confidential information acquired in the course of the lawsuit, including PII, to anyone other than the parties, their attorneys and consultants, and the court. None of this information may be used outside the context of this lawsuit; no student’s identifying records will be disclosed to the public.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets out the requirements for the protection of privacy of parents and students, including privacy of student records. Generally, parents and/or students must provide written consent before an educational agency may disclose PII. However, there are exceptions to this general rule. Specifically, an educational agency must provide PII when ordered by a court, which the CDE has been ordered to do in this litigation. The CDE is obligated to inform the parent or student that the court has ordered it to produce documents and/or data that includes those individuals’ PII and that such persons may object directly to the court regarding this disclosure. To that end, and to comply with FERPA, the CDE has posted the following link on its Web site, http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase, from February 1, 2016, through April 1, 2016. The link provides the Notice and Objection Form required by FERPA.
The objection form is available in English:
http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/di/ws/documents/form2016jan26.pdf
and Spanish:
http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/di/ws/documents/form2016jan26-spanish.pdf
For parents wanting to object to having their child’s student information disclosed to the court, this form (or the information contained in this form) must be sent via regular mail to:
United States District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller
c/o Clerk of the Court Robert T. Matsui United States Courthouse
501 I Street, Room 4-200 Sacramento, CA 95814
Attn: Document Filed Under Seal
This objection form must be submitted to the Court by April 1, 2016
