Welcome returning Students, Parents, and Newcomers to the Star Program!
Hello, my name is Janneth Maragakis, new site director of the 2016-17 school year, and my new assistant Peter Rusch. I would like to acquaint you with some positive changes we have implemented this year to make things easier for you and function more smoothly for both of us. Our accounting department has set up on-line registration and payment for your child on a first-come-first-served basis, beginning Wednesday, August 24, 2016! This enables us to better serve you by fulfilling insurance provisions required by the school district while your child is under our supervision. To further assist you to enroll or answer questions you may have about this changes, we will set up a table in the lobby of the school between 2:00 and 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 24th, Thursday, August 25th, and Friday, August 26th. At that time you may enroll your child, pay by check or on-line, review a program brochure, pick up scholarship applications (watch up for deadlines, as this will be extremely enforced) or get clarification on any classes being offered this session. Since many fill up quickly, we suggest you obtain on-line information for registration at benjaminfranklin.starinc.org or stop by next week (8/24 – 8/26) to speak with one of us. Hopefully, by now, all of you have a Star Brochure, (if not, please visit our website benjaminfranklin.starinc.org for a digital copy), I want to point out a few changes and mistakes: the violin class on Tuesdays was moved to Wednesdays, same times. All classes on Thursdays (early dismissal day) will be as follows: 1:15 to 2:15 for K, 1, 2, 3rd grades, 2:15 to 3:15 for 4, 5, and 6 graders.
We are looking forward to another stimulating class year in the STAR program with you and your child!
Yours truly,
Janneth Maragakis, Site Director
Peter Rusch, Assistant Site Director

Have a wonderful Sunday night, remember to Be SMART, and I will see you tomorrow morning before 8:05 AM. Goodbye.
Hello parents,
I hope we all recuperate after the craziness of registration. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a couple of issues:
During registration our data system allows up to 100 people to enroll at one time. Therefore, the period from 2-3pm is reserved for kindergarten classes, since most are new students that take more time to set up an account. The period after 3pm is reserved for grades 1-6. However, we had a jam up on the first day with all grades trying at once.
We appreciate your patience by waiting a while until the site resets to accept more people.
We still have some openings in classes that your child may be interested in. Please check our website for the most current updates.
Regards,
Janneth and Peter

To all parents of Benjamin Franklin Students
The Star Nova I session will be over in a few weeks with no break between for the Nova II program beginning on October 31st. Therefore, registration for the second session will start on Tuesday, October 25, with Kindergarten at 9 am and grades 1-6 at 10 am. Since registration will be only on-line for this second session, it is important that you establish an on-line account if you do not already have one. You may do that immediately if you wish. Current account holders need not re-apply unless you need to update personal items that have changed in your file.
Brochures will be distributed on the Thursday folder 10/20, so please make sure to check our new classes that have been added or eliminated since the first session. In particular, the Star Eco Station will be offering a hands-on interactive class called “Animal Architects.” Because this class involves interaction with live animals coming from our Culver City Eco Station facility, we will need full participation in at least two of the three classes (7 students each). Otherwise, there may be cancellations.
Scholarship applications will be available on the 20th as well as the brochures at the main office. Dateline for scholarship is October 28th. If you have any question or concerns, please contact your site director Janneth at (310) 912-4251.

Good News: We will be having a special Be SMART – Pokémon Day on December 1st when students can turn in 90 OWL Bucks/Stamps to play with Pokémon Cards during recess.

Dear Franklin Families,
This is Principal Atikian with your Sunday night message for the week of December 12th.
Thank you to BFEF, parent lead, Maureen Cassidy, our wonderful teachers, our many parent volunteers, and Music Teacher, Sara Quintanar for a truly amazing Winter Spectacular Friday night. It was a beautiful celebration of the language programs we offer at Franklin.
The unique music program, as well as many of our enrichment programs and our invaluable teacher interns, would not be possible without the full funding of BFEF, so if you haven't made your annual donation yet, please consider doing so before the end of the year, so you can write it off on your taxes. Please also contact your employer to see if they match your charitable donations, many companies do, and it's an easy way to increase your contribution. All funds raised go to our students. We are hoping for 100% participation in contribution no matter what the amount.
Tomorrow, Dec. 12th, is our 4th-6th Grade Spelling Bee. The winner from this event will represent Franklin in the GUSD Spelling Bee.
Students will have an opportunity to shop at our Kid’s Holiday Boutique on Monday for K-3rd Grades and Tuesday for 4th-6th Grades. Students will either go with their classes or they can shop at recess and lunch. If you’d like your child to participate, please send money with them. There will be scarves, ornaments, picture frames and other goodies available for $1-8 dollars.
You can continue with your holiday shopping from 4-5:30 PM in the Auditorium on Tuesday before our monthly PTA meeting. The Holiday PTA Meeting starts at 5:30 PM with some delicious refreshments. Childcare will be available. I hope to see you there.
Last Chance to win an iPad Air 2 (128 GB, WiFi & Cellular, Silver) or Apple Watch (Series 2, Black, Black Sports Band, 42mm). Raffle Tickets will be on sale Wednesday morning at the Flagpole or Tuesday before the PTA meeting from 4-5:30 PM.
Student Council would like you to participate in spreading some joy and cheer with Holiday Happiness Grams. Write a message to anyone at school and your Happiness Gram and pencil will be delivered to classrooms on Friday for only 50 cents each!!! Grams will be sold at recess and lunch on Wednesday. Also, Student Council encourages you to show some school spirit by digging in the back of your closet and wearing your ugliest or most festive holiday sweater on Friday, December 16th.

Don’t want to wait in line? You can even order online then go to just pick it up? The code for online orders is 224865 (it’s in the flier too). So please, consider picking up some Chinese food this weekend while you are spending some time shopping, or bring it home to enjoy for some Sunday football!
Check within your google groups to see what time works for your class, the kids love seeing their friends outside of school!
Once again, happy holidays and thank you for supporting Franklin Magnet School!
Goooo Franklin!!!
Dear Franklin Families,
This is Principal Atikian with your Sunday night message for the week of January 9, 2017. I hope you have all had a wonderful and joyful vacation.
If it doesn’t rain, we will be doing a New Year PBIS Kick Off on Monday and Tuesday. During this time, we will review our PBIS Matrix, which outlines what the behavioral expectations are for various areas in the school. The Matrix will be attached to the written version of this message and is also in the Family Handbook.
PTA is excited to announce the Apex Fun Run starting on January 17th and lasting 2 weeks. Apex Athletes will be teaching all of our students about PBIS Leadership and Fitness as they raise pledges to support our school. Please look in your child’s Thursday folder and eBlast for more information or visitwww.apexfunrun.com
We were unable to have our December awards assembly because of rain. This will be rescheduled for January 18th.
Also on January 18th, we will have our District Math Coach, Matt Hamo, doing a special presentation in the auditorium starting at 5:30 PM. He will discuss the math standards, how everyone can be successful in math, and how parents can help their children at home. Parents will be the students, experiencing the strategic thinking and problem solving that is at the heart of being successful in mathematics.
It’s very important to start the new year off on the right foot. Please make sure that your child is in school any day that they are not sick. Please make sure that your child is in school on time, which means being in line before 8:05 AM. Tardies are disruptive for the student who is late and the whole class. Please make being in school and being on time a priority. Starting tomorrow, January 9th, students who are 1-29 minutes late will receive a receive a laminated, reusable Late Slip and will fill out a log at the office with their name, teacher name, and time entering. Students who are 30+ minutes late will fill out a form that will need to be signed by a parent/caregiver and returned to school. Three or more tardies of 30 minutes plus will equal an absence. This is a District-wide policy.
Pick up at Dismissal needs to be at either the walking gate or the driving gate, not from the school Lobby. Please make sure to pick up your child on time. Kindergarten dismissal is at 1:20 PM, 1st-3rd grade dismissal is at 2:15 PM, and 4th-6th grade dismissal is at 2:40 PM. Thank you for helping us to keep a safe and secure campus by following our policies and procedures.
Have a restful Sunday night, remember to Be SMART, and I will see you tomorrow before 8:05 AM. Goodbye!
Dear Science Fair Participant Parents,
Thank you so much for encouraging science exploration and experimentation with your child!
Maestra Prado and I have reviewed all the project proposals and gave feedback/approval on them before we left for Winter Break. All of the students had wonderful ideas and some with great ambition to solve the world's pestering problems. In the spirit of an experiment project for the Science Fair, please make sure that the question your child is asking hasmeasurable data with a control and one (or several) variable(s). The hypothesis should be based on what they believe will happen in the various scenarios of the question they posed. Please note that only display boards will be accepted. No experiment materials will be allowed in front of the display board. Take pictures to put in your data area!
Please look on our school website for important information about rules and regulations and Science Fair Project tips!
· Display Board Layout reference is available on our school website - the board must be able to stand on its own
· No experiments/models may be placed in front of the project board. Points will be lost for any experiments accompanying the display board.
· Please review the attached judging criteria for projects (only 4th-6th graders will be presenting to the judges).
· To keep projects anonymous, please label the display board with only your Science Fair number (no student names). Science Fair numbers were written on the feedback sheets sent before Winter Break. Please email me if you need to know your child’s number.
Important dates:
· Monday, Feb 6th - projects are due in the auditorium in the morning
· Thursday, Feb 9th - Science Fair Family Night, 6pm - 8pm
o Awards ceremony at 7pm
o There will be a live voting this year for "Audiences' Favorite" in K-3, and 4th-6th
· Friday, Feb 10th - all projects need to be picked up after school and before 6pm (when the EEELP gate locks)

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! :)
Dear Parents,
I want to thank all of you for your continued support of Franklin Magnet School and our PTA. Without you and your support, our children would not have the programs and benefits this school provides above and beyond what the district offers. We rely on your support to continue enriching the children, and we are always looking for new ways to achieve these goals in a way that not only generates the necessary funds, but develops the children, as well.
The PTA Executive Board had heard from others schools about a fundraising program they have used called the APEX FUN RUN. We decided to invite them to a meeting to hear their pitch. The board was in agreement that we weren’t looking to add a giant fundraiser (we know how much we already ask of you, and believe me even I get overwhelmed sometimes), but we were really intrigued by the PBIS aspect of the program, and the benefit that the program would provide to the children. PBIS (PositiveBehavioral Interventions and Supports) is a Department of Education program and is the basis for Franklin’s Be SMART initiative and structure. For more information, please visit https://www.pbis.org/.
The APEX team was very open about the donation structure. They retain 48% of the donations while the school keeps 52%. This was definitely a concern at first mention, but upon further discussion, we realized a few things. First, Apex does not collect any payment for their services. They provide a team of coaches on campus for two weeks. They provide all of the materials, instruction, support, personnel, signage, prizes and rewards, and they organize and execute the actual run from beginning to end. All of these costs come from the 48%. When the PTA hires a speaker to put on an assembly for one day, it usually costs about $1,000. This is much bigger in scale and scope, and a program like this would cost several thousand dollars. The Fun Run Team would be taking a risk on their end because if we only raised $1,000, they would be paid $480, and would take a huge loss.
This worked for us since instead of paying a large up-front fee, that money would be deducted directly from the donations and if we didn’t raise enough to cover that large fee, then we weren’t obligated to make up the difference. We approved the program knowing that it would either pay for itself through the fundraising, while providing additional funds to the school and PTA, or we wouldn’t make very much money at all, yet would still provide the children with PBIS education. We also decided that the PTA would not stress the fundraising aspect, and would only make brief, sort of afterthought messages in emails, Sunday messages, or weekly blasts. Upon reviewing some of the messaging, this wasn’t entirely accomplished, and is being addressed.
The program has been a big success as far as getting the children engaged in positive behavior and activity. Teachers have been telling me that the students love the 10-15 minutes per day with coaches, and get excited for each new session. While the majority of parents and children are really enjoying the program, there is a very small handful that have voiced concern or outright displeasure. I can assure everyone that Apex was fully forthcoming with the way the program is run, including how donations are divided. They have been 100% transparent with us, as has every single fundraising company we have worked with in the past. The company has also participated with other schools in the Glendale Unified School District, and we received immensely positive feedback from these schools, and this positive feedback factored into our decision. Every fundraising company we work with takes a percentage, but none of them also provide a full two-week program with staff members, education, and enrichment. The percentage is definitely larger than a standard fundraiser, but it also provides an entire PBIS program, which is where that extra percentage goes. If we make a boat load of money, then Apex certainly benefits greatly, but if we generate the amount we were expecting, then they will be lucky to recoup their costs.
One of the concerns raised is the incentive messaging and the idea of prizes being used as incentives for greater efforts in fundraising. While you may not agree with the practice, rewards and incentives are a powerful and valuable tool which directly translates to real life experience. Employees are rewarded with bonuses and raises for performing above and beyond. Students are also rewarded for working harder. If a student just works to get by, he may graduate high school. If he works harder, he can get into college. If he works even harder, he can get into an even better college, and if he works really hard and does various activities, he may be rewarded with a scholarship.
Another concern brought to my attention is children being sad for not getting enough pledges to earn certain prizes. I have had to deal with this myself, when a couple of years ago my children wanted the top prize for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program. That’s right, even a national charitable organization such as the AHA brings fundraisers into our schools, and rewards our students with prizes based on pledges – and we got MUCH less than 52% of those funds raised. Anyhow, I explained to my children (as parents should) that they are not entitled to every prize, and if they want it, they need to obtain the designated amount of pledges, and if they couldn’t, that was ok – you can’t have everything you want, whenever you want it. A valuable life lesson. While a student may be rewarded for her efforts, she will never be punished or looked down upon for little or no fundraising at all. We never want children to feel sad about not getting a prize, and while the majority of students are having a great time with this, if your child is not, then it may be a good time to have a conversation with him or her, and explain these important lessons.
I stand 100% behind our decision to bring this program to Franklin. The children are loving it and are truly benefitting from what the coaches are teaching them each day. If you have an idea for new or different PTA programs, or are not happy with any current ones, you are ALWAYS welcome to voice your opinion at an association meeting, or to me directly. If you like something, tell me. If you don’t like something, tell me. You have a voice as PTA member. My email address (scot...@gmail.com) is provided on the PTA page at http://franklinmagnetschool.org. I am always available to listen to suggestions, answer questions, and address any concerns, and the PTA is always looking for new ideas, new voices, and new faces. We can all make a difference if we are involved and communicate - we can find beneficial solutions together.
Serving Your Children and Mine,
Scott Silver

Look out for the invitations to our 7th annual live auction and gala in your Thursday folder! Tickets for the March 11th event will go on sale this week. Even if you can't join us, many great items will be available through our online auction the week before the event. To make that happen, we need your help getting great auction items! We are asking every family to get or donate one item. That's just ONE! Ask for donations from businesses you frequently visit. Ask your favorite restaurant for a dinner for two, ask a sports team or theater for tickets, or ask for a donated class at your kids' enrichment program. Maybe your hairdresser, gym or chiropractor would donate their services. They'll be glad to promote their businesses to our school community. The donation request letter and donation submission form are attached. If you have questions or need an item picked up, please contact Sandra Stadler at san...@yahoo.com.
Thank you to all of the wonderful people who made our BFEF Science Fair a great success last week. I know there were many volunteers and supporters (see attached flyer). A special thank you to lead staff, Ms. Gargiulo and Ms. Prado, and to lead parents, Mary Lee Behar and Janet Atienza.

Dear Franklin parents,
After 25 years of being at Franklin, it is really difficult to say “good-bye”. The time has come for me to retire. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you and your children throughout these years.
I have seen Franklin convert into a Magnet School and transform as these dual immersion FLAG programs have grown and are now into the middle school and high school. I have been fortunate enough to see so many students become bilingual and biliterate in languages that they did not know when they entered kindergarten. What an inspitation! I have seen many of you transition from when you tearfully said good-bye to your kindergarteners on the first day of school to when you tearfully say good-bye to Franklin as they promote onto middle school. I thank you for your continuous support. I will always have fond memories of Franklin: the amazing students and their families, the wonderful, hard-working staff and the supportive district. I take with me many fond memories. I will miss all of you.
I hope to see you “around” as I plan to come back and visit!
Thank you! Merci! Danke! Grazie! Gracias!
