Afterthat, you need to make it a priority to get to know your employees and to build relationships with them. When you understand what your employees need on an individual level, you increase your ability to lead them towards your own goals. If you spend just a few minutes a day getting to know the people who work for you, it will pay off exponentially in the long run.
Finally, focus on improving your communication skills. Maxwell writes that if you rate yourself as anything lower than an 8/10 on your public speaking skills, you have work to do. Take a class, read a book, or join a group that will help you become a better speaker. Communicating your vision is key to forming lasting connections with your employees.
As noted on the ITS Answers Page, the campus VPN (also known as the SURA utility for Windows users) used to access campus resources was decommissioned by ITS on January 15th, 2022. To provide a more secure connection to campus, ITS has implemented the Syracuse University Remote Desktop Service (RDS). When logged in to RDS you will have access to your normal desktop and files (G, H, printers, etc.). Additionally, if you need to access your office computer or research virtual machine, you can do so from within the RDS desktop service by using the Windows Remote Desktop Connection client with these three easy steps:
Recently, I attended a meeting with representatives of our City Planning Department. There were plans to redirect a road that would affect an apartment community we manage, and I needed to understand the implications it might have on our business.
John C. Maxwell, in Everyone Communicates Few Connect, teaches us that effective communication requires real connection. Further, connection is all about OTHERS. While there are many reasons that people fail to connect, including immaturity, ego, and insecurity, we are reminded that coming from a place of service in communicating with others can ensure purposeful, others-focused connection.
The obvious result of this interaction was a release of tension in the room. So much so, that conversation moved into brainstorming potential future projects that would benefit both the City and our apartment communities in the vicinity.
As an entrepreneur in the multifamily real estate management industry, Amy works with many cross-departmental teams. She has held leadership positions in both state and national industry associations, as well as consulted internationally in board and organizational development.
If it is true that almost everything we become and accomplish in life is with and through other people, then the ability to create rapport with them is the most important skill we can learn. Looking back at the early and middle stages of my career, I identified six practices that helped me to connect with others. I trust that they will be beneficial to you in honing your skills as a connector.
1. I Understood the Value of Connecting With Others.
As a young leader, I quickly bumped up against my personal limitations. I realized that what I could accomplish on my own paled in comparison to what I could get done by linking up with others. I became aware that my influence depended upon my ability to connect with those around me, and I switched my mindset from being a solo producer to being a people developer.
The art of connection takes time to master. I started off as a terrible communicator; I was long-winded and uninteresting. Thankfully, I was determined to improve. After gaining experience, I began to think more about the context of connection than its content. That is, I learned to focus on my audience rather than myself. I began to rehearse my messages in front of one person, and then in the presence of a small group, before delivering them to large audiences. The extra practice on the front end tremendously aided my ability to connect during actual speaking engagements.
To define a Y-connection:
1. Click Maxwell 2D (or Maxwell 3D)>Excitations>Setup Y Connection.
The Setup Y Connection dialogue appears.
2. In the Winding list on the left, select the windings to be grouped into a Y connection.
3. Click the Group button to create a Y Connection group with the selected windings.
4. Click OK when all required grouping have been created.
Over the weekend I was flipping through a few books in my queue and came across Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John C. Maxwell. The book is focused on the way we communicate on a daily basis. In order to become a leader, you need to enhance and perfect your communication in your day-to-day situations. Maxwell breaks the concept into two main areas: the principles of connection and the practices of well-connected leaders.
These five guidelines are a good start to help you enhance your connections with others. Practicing these skills will improve your discourse and your communications with others. During a quiet holiday weekend, it was nice to have some positive reading about connecting with others to round out the weekend.
LAMMPS Phase 3 originally began as the Seminary Avenue Paving Project in 2023, which proposed improvements along Seminary Avenue from Foothill Blvd to Sunnymere Blvd as part of the City's planned repaving of Seminary in 2025. During outreach for the paving project, it became clear that residents favored a Class I off-street walking and biking path on Seminary Avenue from Camden St to Sunnymere Blvd. This design was more intensive than what a paving project can deliver, so the Seminary Avenue Paving Project was split into two parts in late 2023:
The main goals of LAMMPS Phase 3 are to slow traffic, close a gap in the City's bike network, and improve pedestrian safety. As mentioned above, the project will include a Class I off-street walking and biking path. This path will connect to the LAMMPS 2 path that will end at MacArthur and Seminary and, by extension, the LAMMPS 1 pathway that exists north of Richards Road on MacArthur. Once the LAMMPS 2 and 3 project phases are complete, a 1.7 mile off-street recreational path will connect residents in Millsmont, Mills Garden, Frick, and Maxwell Park with the Mills/Northeastern campus and the Laurel District. We are very excited to bring this world-class infrastructure to our East Oakland neighborhoods.
The lower portion of the original Seminary Avenue Paving Project, from Foothill Boulevard to Camden Street, will still be repaved and receive safety improvements. OakDOT's Paving team will lead this repaving work, scheduled to occur in 2026. Based on feedback from residents during the 2023 outreach, the project will include safety features like new marked crossings, flashing crossing lights, speed cushions, potentially traffic circles, and other traffic calming measures.
Spring 2023
OakDOT staff began in-person and virtual outreach in Spring 2023 for the Seminary Avenue Paving Project (Sunnymere to Foothill) to learn what residents, business owners, and other stakeholders would like to see improved on Seminary Avenue.
Summer 2023 - Bike Survey
the project team sent out a widely distributed survey (now closed) about what sort of bike connection to build between Camden Avenue and Sunnymere Boulevard. Survey results showed that 85% of residents in the surrounding area favored a Class 1 off-street walking and biking path, as opposed to a protected on-street bike lane.

"Maxwell was among Epstein's closest associates and helped him exploit girls who were as young as 14 years old," Audrey Strauss, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said at a news conference Thursday.
Maxwell faces charges that include transporting a minor for the purposes of criminal sexual activity and conspiring to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, according to a six-count grand jury indictment that was unsealed earlier in the day.
The federal charges against her largely align with allegations by Epstein's victims, who have accused Maxwell of helping the disgraced financier run a sex-trafficking ring that victimized teenage girls.
In the months since Epstein died, federal agents have been keeping an eye on Maxwell, according to William F. Sweeney Jr., assistant director in charge of the FBI's New York Field Office. He said the effort involved FBI offices in Boston; Newark, N.J.; New Haven, Conn.; and Albany, N.Y.
The document alleges a pattern of behavior, saying Maxwell took the girls shopping and to the movies, asked them about their families and their lives at school and then attempted "to normalize sexual abuse." She sometimes did that, the indictment alleges, by undressing in front of the victims or involving them in "sexualized massages."
"Maxwell's presence during minor victims' interactions with Epstein, including interactions where the minor victim was undressed or that involved sex acts with Epstein, helped put the victims at ease because an adult woman was present," the indictment states.
In a detention memorandum filed Thursday, prosecutors said Maxwell "appears to have been hiding on a 156-acre property acquired in an all-cash purchase in December 2019 (through a carefully anonymized LLC)" in Bradford, N.H.
Noting her substantial wealth and lack of ties to the community, the document states, "In short, Maxwell has three passports, large sums of money, extensive international connections, and absolutely no reason to stay in the United States and face the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence."
We are considering moving from Berkeley to Maxwell Park with our young children. Beyond the questions of schools, I'd love some feedback about the neighborhood. Is there a strong sense of community? Is there anything to walk to, or is everything a drive? Does the neighborhood generally feel safe? Thanks for any insights.
