I believe it to be triggered by I/O, because if the machine isn't very busy, I can watch Netflix just fine. Large file copies or DVD reads will cause the problem. I might normally think this is just a machine limitation, but with 8 cores and 16 GB of memory, I really don't think that's the problem. I really think it is a Silverlight / Netflix problem.
And here's the real kicker. Under the same load that causes Netflix to be unwatchable, I can fire up a virtual machine running Windows (thereby *increasing* system load), run a copy of Google in the virtual machine, and Netflix will play perfectly in it. So I really don't think it's a problem with the machine's capabilities.
Is there any kind of setting I can check, or a preference that I can change to resolve the problem? I hate to have a whole virtual machine running just to run Netflix when I already have a native player available.
I have the same problem on my mid 2011 27" iMac with a quad core 3.4GHz i7 with 16GB of DDR3 ram. Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, Netflix stutters. I also have the same results with a virtual machine. I can watch Netflix in a Windows XP vm, or a Windows 8 vm, with no stuttering. It doesn't matter if Safari or Firefox is the only program running.
It has been a week -- no solution or workaround has been suggested, and a handful of other people are having the same problem. Andrew has verified my experience and assumption that it is not a machine capability problem.
Is there no solution? Are we doomed to running a Windows VM just to watch Netflix? Even though I found no solution when searching the web, I found plenty of people having this problem. Have any of the three parties involved (Apple, Microsoft, and Netflix) expressed any concern?
There seems to be little to no stuttering for me now, but I'm not sure what changed. I cleared the Sliverlight application storage for Netflix, and that seems to be the last thing I did before it stopped stuttering, but I cannot confirm that nothing else changed on my computer. Here's what I did:
Go to the Application Storage tab and delete the application storage for Netflix. For good measure you might want to log out and log back in to make sure that Sliverlight doesn't keep anything cached. Just a heads up: after doing this the volume for the Netflix player will go back to 100%.
I get choppy video if I use Firefox on a 2012 Mac Mini with 10.8.2, but it's smooth (most of the time) if I use Safari. It's definitely NOT the load as it was using only 6% on Firefox. The plugin uses 85% in Safari but it's smooth (less than one core, though). The one thing I do like is that I can put Netflix on my 2nd monitor in full screen and still use my primary monitor for doing other things (unlike Apple's own full screen crap which makes the other monitor useless most of the time). I'm actually able to play Scrabble on pogo.com, transmit 720P webcam over skype to another player and watch HD movies with no real ill effect. I don't know why Firefox is choppy, though. Firefox uses nearly 100% to play Scrabble on Pogo.com too while Safari only uses like 3% plus the Java usage (16% which is the same for both). Why would Firefox need so much CPU power when Java is doing nearly ALL the work? I like Firefox better for browsing, but clearly it ***** at some tasks online at least in OSX.
This won't be any help for the many who have tried various browsers along with so many other possible solutions, but for what it's worth I can say that using Safari instead of Firefox seems to have brought Netfix back to normal for me.
This is after I went from 2GB to 4GB RAM, did a complete clean reinstall of the whole Macbook, reset the SMC, and ran a complete Hardware Test that raised no faults on the fan, battery, processor or anything.
Thanks! This not only helped choppy full screen playback in Netflix with Firefox, it also fixed my issue with suddenly not being able to play Netflix in Safari at all! Both were recent problems too, like within days. At first it was a choppy play back only using full screen mode in Netflix with Safari then, when Netflix wouldn't even load, I jumped over to Firefox. Worked fine until I'd try and view things in full-screen mode. So, I deleted one thing at a time in Silverlight storage. Only deleted two things and the issue was fixed right away but since there were three Netflix items, all duplicates, I just deleted the other two. Suddenly, I could log in to Netflix from Safari again and full screen mode on both browsers was normal again. Oddest thing ever but it worked. Because I had PLENTY of space - roughly 250 GBs - and I had already fixed permissions et al.
During a subsequent phone call with apple support this afternoon , I was informed that with upcoming updates for Safari , that the Netflix issues might be resolved.....mind you that before I updated to El Capitan , all was good.
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit, which I installed using the original release (not the newer 12.04.2 release), and have been successfully using netflix-desktop ever since the ppa:ehoover/compholio repository was made available. I never encountered any problems, whatsoever, until a couple of days ago.
For those that don't like messing with the console, you can just go to your home directory and either click on "View" and check "Show Hidden Files", or just press Ctrl+H, then scroll down until you see the folder labeled ".wine-browser", perform a right mouse-click on the folder, and select "Move to Trash" from the resulting menu.
I don't think it is the silverlight update which does it. It is Firefox update. So press F11 to get into window mode. Then press F10. Go to Options/Preferences ->Advanced-> updates, then disable the automatic browser update.
My Teenager made some changes to Firefox settings to do some Roblox stuff. I dont know what she did and she is not sure either. since then, I cannot use Netflix. If I try to view a movie, then i get a page asking to install HTML5 or the silverlight pluginI have tried doing all the suggested workarounds but nothing worksI have Chrome as a backup browser, and Netflix runs OK on chrome. I prefer to have everything on firefox as, - up to now - it does everything i want or needany advice please
Thank you for your help. Roblox had, indeed, put some extra stuff into my useragent.I had no idea what useragent was but, I followed the link from TerryN21 and was able to follow the advice there without too much difficulty.Firefox is back working correctly with Netflix.cheers
I was going to post this question, but then I figured out the answer, so now I'll post the question and the answer for anyone else who searches how to do this. This is for windows but may work on other OS idk.
Netflix detects that I run a browser which is supposed to have html5 DRM support, so it goes straight to using the html5 player. So I disable DRM in firefox, and set Widevine to never activate. But then when I try to watch a netflix video, instead of it using silverlight, which I have, it plays nothing and tells me to Enable DRM. That's pretty much a bug with their system or firefox, or just a poor design choice imo.
To fix it and force Netflix to use Silverlight, you just have to install a User Agent switcher and pretend to be a slightly older version of firefox (for example 40). Then Netflix will think your browser doesn't have html5 drm capability and it will use silverlight.
If silverlight was not being phased out, it would clearly be poor design to not fall back gracefully so the user can still get at the content. The phasing out is really the only excuse not to want to do that.
As it is, since silverlight performs more efficiently than the html5 player, this design choice (or oversight) is basically making a bunch of computers obsolete 5 months sooner than they need to be. (While a much much larger amount of computers are not affected lol.)
I did not know that happened. I would have presumed Netflix just no longer supports Browsers using Silverlight. I do not think it is a bug or poor design, you are just managing to exploit their loophole that allows support of legacy browsers.
I will mark this solved. There is not anything more we will be able to do to fix this issue for you. Solved threads show up in internal and external searches so your post will be found and seen by more people.
Hi guys. The Microsoft Edge is my favorite browser of all times, really, but not when I try to watch netflix or other video streaming services, it always breaks, I have no ideia what to do anymore. Always when I try to play something there's an error and then I need to reload over and over again, sometimes even when I just play the video it stop working when I try to play again. Help me to keep using this best browser that I've ever seen.
I've ever tried to disable hardware acceleration, enable DRM content, install Microsoft Silverlight and a lot of other things, but I didn't get to watch so far without an error I keep receiving these error codes: D7356-7701 and others related. Is there's still something that can be done to really fix theses erros or I just have to be patient and wait for news versions of the browser?
I have this strange issue where when watching Netflix in either IE11, Edge or Netflix App in full screen mode the display would sometimes flicker or goes black for a few seconds then back to the video. This would happen continuously every 10 second of so during playback.
