Hi guys! sorry for the lack of participation lately. I wanted to share some of my personal life with you all hence the creation of the new topic.

I work as a QC Engineer in one of the most important hospital in latin america in cardiovascular procedures and surgeries. This time of the year is crazy busy because we have to prepare everything for the international re-accreditation, national accreditation and iso re-certification and i'm part of the lead group. On friday we got the re-accreditation from the joint commission international and that's a huge achievement for us, we have the ISO audit on the 11th so this and next week i won't have much spare time, however i always keep up to date by reading.

Well that's what i've been up to at work but i thought i should introduce myself. I'm 25, an industrial engineer, I'm from Colombia and the city where i live is called Bucaramanga. This is my g+ profile --> http://goo.gl/wXHN6 so if you have an account and if you want feel free to add me to your circles.

I'm glad to be part of this, although i don't have much technical knowledge i've always been very keen and willing to learn new things and i will try to be as helpful as possible. If you've noticed my job/profession has nothing to do with IT, this has been just for fun and as a friend used to say a "part time jobby" :p Thanks to all of you for teaching me new things and give me the chance to join this group. Looking forward to contribute much more :)

Take care guys

Its always interesting hearing about how truly different most people interested in android are and it speaks volumes to how accessible it is that you have people like yourself and myself are able to understand and adapt the android system to our liking.

Since I'm more or less the new guy I'll go ahead and share a little about my self as well (great idea Joaquin).

My real name is Aleem. I'm a 23 year old from Dallas, Texas. Like Joaquin I'm also involved in the healthcare field. I started out doing my undergrad in physics from UTDallas. I am presently attending Medical School out in the Caribbean (95% of my time is spent indoors studying) at Ross University. As such there will inevitably be periods where I will be MIA (specifically leading up to Exams) but I intend to give back as much as I can and participate to a much greater degree than i have in the past on XDA.

I've always been very interested in tech and have often found my self always wanting to know more and understand more. I have a very rudimentary understanding of the linux ecosystem, almost everything I know comes from trying to understand stuff with android. For the most part I'm self taught in this regard as I'm sure many of y'all are. I'm looking forward to learning more from all of y'all and hopefully somewhere along the way I can contribute something as well.

As it stands I do not have access to my build box back stateside but I return to the states for a couple of weeks in April at which point I'm going to see what i can do to set up a remote access to it so i can help build and test.

Can't wait to see what this group produces going forward :D

Its not a Google phone, its just another Motorola device. One of my co-workers worked at Motorola and had the device in hands and told me its nothing special, just a device with a fancy name.

Hey Chris I know you know how to set a rom that doesn't have init.d support so it will. I thought I found a script for it but didn't. lemme find the post I was looking at again

Doesn't Franco kernel allow you to do that anyway by default as a feature? I'm using init.d scripts from here on stock rom

It should and I reinstalled the app. Maybe I need to install the regular free app then the updater. There Isn't any init.d folder or script. I can't find a couple files. I'll look at that thread that has you edit init.sh

I had to create the folder system/etc/init.d as it wasn't automaticly created on instal of the kernel. The free app only downloads the kernels it doesn't allow tuning so don't worry about that. Just create the folder and pop in your scripts, set all permissions and you should be good bud ;) I hope your meds get soon for you

Interesting. That's what Empty Hand and creeve4 said in the GN thread, except Hand was also having trouble with row. Somehow your version has spaces at the end. Not sure why that would be a problem (unless they're carriage returns displaying as spaces..), but creeve4 said removing them fixed it. Download the one I just posted in the xda thread for them. It's got all the latest and works great on both of my devices.

Edit: Now also posted in the cfq thread here. Make sure you download it directly instead of copy+paste so that you know the original newline formatting has been preserved and no weirdness like spaces are getting introduced. :)

That date idea is good.. or we could do an rc# so we know what revision we're on for the forums here and then an r# for public release so we can instantly go back to which to refer back to if there are issues after release. I have however created a folder for finished

My gnex has been behaving very weirdly the last few days, it will last there and when the screen is off sometimes the screen will turn it's self on and suit there at the lock screen till it times out, turns off and then I'll look at it again and see its doing this quite frequent. Any ideas why my phone could be doing that?

So may parents have a 17 year old Japanese exchange student staying with them, her spoken English isn't great but boy did she have a great time with my nexus 7 when I went round there and I said here have a play. I saw she had an android phone of some sort before when she showed me some photos of the adventures she had gotten up to on London, Oxford, Windsor Castle and stuff like touristy places. Her phone was a Sony Walkman without a camera and ran android 4.0.4. When she got my tablet I showed her it was android too by going to settings/about phone/android version and said it was 4.2.2 and then let her have free play. I noticed she was impressed with app drawer page scrolling as she was going nuts flicking through page per page really fast and there was no lag or nothing. We played Asphalt 6 for a while and angry birds and GTA vice city which she particularly liked! My device performed great and I thought it was great to see my device perform as well as it did and that a Japanese person was impressed with the performance of it. She played for 2.5 hours on games. Im running r48 with Os' 14/3 script using interactive with CFQ. We must be doing something right I guess... Cool story huh? :)

Yeah the belching llama (Mike the Llama, the Winamp mascot) was great in passing for 8 years, across the Winamp, uTorrent, DD-WRT and Neowin forums, but after a year being fairly active on xda with it I felt it was time for a change. ;)

Hey Chris (or anyone else with a Grouper):

My son has a N7 and wants to root it (chip off the old block!).  I've only ever rooted my GN, and it took away my ability to receive OTA updates via Verizon - which was fine for me - I think when I installed a custom recovery.

Anyway, if my son wants to run stock JB 4.2.2, Franco Kernel, and still receive OTA updates from Google, is that even possible?  I would guess that it may require rooting without installing a custom recovery, or possibly losing root with every update, but I honestly don't know.  Maybe Google pushes updates even to rooted devices with custom recoveries as long as they are still on the stock ROM?

Any advice from those who've been there would be appreciated.  I can definitely do the unlocking and rooting without hand-holding, just curious about the logistics since I don't think my son is up to flashing ROMs with every update (without potentially messing something up), and he has indicated he wants to stay stock for now at least.

Thanks.

Its the same as every device (as far as I know) the OTA will download on a stock rom but in order to install OTA update you have to have stock recovery and the matching rom, kernel, baseband that matches with the previous build the system is updating from and I believe it checks the MD5 in order to do this. If the system detects there is a mismatch the OTA will fail to install, you get stuck in recovery for a few minutes then the device will reboot on its own.

How ever I beleive you can push it through with ADB, or the simple way is the using the 'back up / restore' feature in Franco app, save the stock kernel.img and then restore it for OTA, or flash a google factory rom and dont flash the user data so the device isn't wiped clean (although recommended if switching roms). The device still gets wiped for boot loader unlocking (same as tuna) and if you get your son one get the 32gb version if you can (you saw how much better it performs) and you can help test more stuff when you can steal it off him ;)

Steve (Gingerbread Man)

If you apply OTA on rooted rom it will get unrooted but with supersu (paid) there is an option for survival mode where it tries to keep rooted after OTA or an app by supercurio called OTA Root Keeper (free) is meant to do the same thing.

Just keep the boot loader unlocked so it won't wipe every time if you had to unlock again for some reason.

Chris (osm0sis)

Recovery doesn't matter for flashing OTAs, in fact it's better to run custom since you can just download and flash it yourself. Neither does root, any recent custom recovery will restore the correct permissions to su, so no special "rootkeeper"-like steps required. All the OTA checks for are the system files the it's going to patch/replace (so ROM), the kernel and radio. OTAs also add a recovery script that will revert you to the latest stock recovery but CWM at least has protection against this and will disable it after it corrects the su permissions when you try to reboot.

So really nothing to worry about. You could probably get your Verizon GN going too. :) Steve's right, you can receive OTAs just fine, they just won't pass the asserts to apply automatically but you can just revert what you changed (ie. kernel) and then flash the OTA in custom recovery instead. Also means you never have to wait to receive it yourself. Just download once the URL drops and you're all set.

My son has the 32 GB version, so I'm happy about that.  Sounds like staying on stock is doable, just have to do a few manual steps, which is fine.

Remember you made a big difference to the scene. I'm still getting pull requests from github all the time for people cherry picking the hardcoded values.

And if you ever run into someone running f.K on one of the current Nexus devices and want to show off, just have them go to Terminal Emulator then su -c cat /sbin/fkbootscript.sh and you can point out that's your nick at the front of the list. :)

All the best bro.
