Using a measure of what they called "residual votes" - overcounting,
undercounting or not counting votes for any reason - researchers found that
two existing voting methods had produced relatively low error rates in the
last four presidential elections: old-fashioned hand-counted paper ballots
and optical scan systems.

La dispersion des organismes génétiquement modifiés (OGM) pourrait se faire
sur des distances bien plus importantes que prévues, selon une étude
l'Agence de Protection de l'Environnement (EPA). Classiquement, on estime en
effet que, selon la direction des vents, les pollens des plantes
transgéniques ne dépassent pas un rayon de 2 km autour des cultures ;
au-delà, les risques de croisement et donc de contamination entre espèces
modifiées et sauvages sont considérés comme faibles.
Mais les résultats obtenus par les chercheurs de l'EPA, publiés dans les
Comptes-rendus de l'Académie des Sciences américaine (PNAS), donnent à
entendre un tout autre son de cloche. Pour leur expérience, Lidia Watrud et
ses collègues ont suivi à la trace un gène marqueur, le CP4EPSPS,
préalablement introduit dans une graminée coutumière des terrains de golf,
Agrostis stolonifera. L'analyse des zones limitrophes du champ cultivé a
révélé la présence de pollen viable à plus d'une vingtaine de kilomètres.
L'explication d'une telle performance résiderait dans la surface de culture.
En général, les expériences ont lieu sur des champs relativement petits,
alors que dans le cas présent, des milliers de graminées ont été plantées
sur près de 162 kilomètres carrés - une superficie qui, soulignent les
chercheurs, se rapproche davantage de la réalité.
Ces données inquiètent évidemment les responsables du Département de
l'agriculture. D'autant qu'Agrostis stolonifera n'est pas une plante
anodine. Deux sociétés de biotechnologies, Monsanto et Scotts, ont élaboré
des espèces résistantes à l'insecticide Roundup avec l'objectif de faciliter
l'entretien des terrains de golf. Or la transmission de cette résistance aux
plantes sauvages risquerait de faire apparaître une "super mauvaise herbe".
Le Département de l'Agriculture s'est donné un minimum d'un an pour examiner
l'impact de ce genre de produit sur l'environnement avant de donner son
accord pour une éventuelle commercialisation.

The Israeli daily Ma'ariv newspaper reported the story of a Palestinian
worker, Sameeh, who was forced by the Israeli soldiers, manning the Abu Dees
checkpoint to choose between having his hands and legs broken or drinking
the soldiers' urine!
The Palestinian civilian told Ma'ariv about the cruel abuse they received by
the soldiers, who drew a lot on the civilians' ID cards, choosing two cards,
including his, and then released the others.
Sameeh and the other civilian were detained by the soldiers and were forced
in what Israeli soldiers call 'entertainment' to choose one from three
paper notes inside a box. The paper notes carry different punishment ways
for the civilians, including breaking hands, legs and drinking from bottles
filled with the soldiers' urine.
He told the newspaper that when he refused to take part in this
'entertainment', the soldiers attacked him and sprayed his face with one of
the urine bottles. "After that I couldn't bear any longer, so I pushed the
soldier away, then all six of them jumped me and pointed their M- 16 assault
rifles at me, ordering me to drink the urine or be shot dead."
Sameeh added that he was forced to drink the urine until he fell
unconscious. He was found by other civilians near the checkpoint, and was
transferred to the Abu Dees clinic, where his stomach was emptied of the
urine, and he was then moved to Beit Jala Hospital, where he remained there
until Monday.

demographie a pris par surprise les membres du bureau israelien de
l¹Initiative de Geneve.

s¹exprimeront dans des spots televisuels destines a persuader les deux
parties , de l¹existence d¹un interlocuteur dans l¹autre camp.
Les interviews des Israeliens seront retransmises sur la chaine de
television officielle de l¹Autorite Palestinienne ainsi que sur d¹autres
canaux arabophones comme Al-Jazira et Al-Arabya, alors que celles des
Palestiniens seront projetees dans les cinemas Israeliens y compris dans
l¹unique salle de la colonie d¹Ariel.
« Il est temps d¹en finir avec l¹idee fixe qui a prevalu sous Barak et
Sharon : il n¹y a personne a qui parler », a declare Gadi Baltiansky,

Four Turkish journalists working for Milliyet were taken into custody
in Iraq by Iraqi National Guards and then by US forces and were
released only after eight hours of interrogation. A group of Turkish
journalists sent to Iraq by daily Milliyet who were carrying proper
travel documentation from U.S. officials to go to Mosul were arrested
by U.S. forces on Saturday evening. The U.S. soldiers tied the four
journalists' hands behind their backs and placed ski masks on their
heads. The four had to undergo eight hours of interrogation before
being released. The team, which has been in Iraq for some time, was at
first stopped by Iraqi National Guards. After presenting their papers
they asked to be released, but U.S. Special Forces intervened and
demanded that the Turkish journalists be handed over into their
custody. There was reportedly a brief scuffle between the Iraqis and
the U.S. Special Forces at that point.
