Training and Mobility Research Program (TMR)
The growing interest in developing technologies to support cooperative
work, raises new challenges both for those concerned with
understanding the workplace as well as for designers of complex
systems. A central issue is how we can best support people working
together in complex settings, whether they are co-located in a
particular domain such as air traffic control, or geographically
dispersed across or even between organisations.
There are many issues here at stake. These include how best : (i) to
facilitate productivity of groups of people, co-located or based at
geographically dispersed locations, (ii) to share more easily
information among distributed workgroups in organisations, (iii) to
enable distributed decision-making for high risk situations to be
carried out effectively, (iv) to develop computer supported
'organisational memory' systems that can provide better resources than
currently exist for accessing, sharing and using information when
needed in dynamic work situations.
The summer school is designed for postgraduate students and young
researchers, from various disciplines across the computer, cognitive
and social sciences. The aim of the summer school is to provide
students and researchers with an opportunity of learning both about
each others' research as well as contemporary developments in computer
supported cooperative work. The emphasis of the summer school is in
discussing though lectures and workshops different approaches to the
analysis of technology and collaborative work, and to explore how
those approaches might inform the design and deployment of complex
systems. Aside from lectures, classes and data analysis workshops, the
school will include plenary sessions from internationally reputed
schools are in the area of computer supported cooperative work.
The summer school is part of the COTCOS project under the European
Commission's Training and Mobility Research program which is designed
to facilitate training and mobility amongst postgraduate students and
young researchers. It brings together a number of major European
research centres and groups in the areas of technology and
collaborative work. These include: ARAMIIHS Research Laboratory
(National Institute of Computer Science (IRIT), Paul Sabatier
University), Toulouse, France; Work, The Cooperative and User-centered
Research Group Department of Work Psychology University of Liege,
Belgium; The Center for Tele-Information, Technical University of
Denmark; Work, Interaction and Technology Research Group, King's
College London, U.K.; The School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences
Sussex University, U.K.; Department of Communications and Multi-media,
University of Siena, Italy; Department of Language and Work,
University of Rouen, France; and Department of Computer Science &
Information Systems, University of Limerick, Ireland.
These various centres are currently undertaking projects on news
production, air traffic control, urban rapid transport, design
projects, manufacturing, telecommunications, architecture, and museums
and galleries. They are involved in the design of multimedia mobile
technologies, collaborative virtual environments, command and control
systems, and many other technologies.
Objectives
The main objectives of the summer school will be to (i) familiarise
students with a range of contemporary approaches to the investigation
of technology in the workplace; (ii) explore how these approaches can
be used to inform the design, evaluation, and deployment of new
technologies, and (iii) consider the long-term empirical, conceptual
and methodological contributions of workplace studies. As part of the
course we will discuss such diverse approaches as distributed
cognition, activity theory, and ethnomethodology. The summer school
will include classes and courses on field work, video analysis, focused groups,
user centred design, tasks and activity analysis.
